{"id":183575,"date":"2021-02-19T19:41:51","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T16:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/heres-why-racism-is-rampant-on-dating-apps\/"},"modified":"2021-02-19T19:41:51","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T16:41:51","slug":"heres-why-racism-is-rampant-on-dating-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/heres-why-racism-is-rampant-on-dating-apps\/","title":{"rendered":"#Here&#8217;s why racism is rampant on dating apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Here&#8217;s why racism is rampant on dating <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The authors of a new book are arguing for race-blind dating apps \u2014 and the removal of filters for race and ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>Finding love, they say, isn\u2019t so black-and-white.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new book, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucpress.edu\/book\/9780520293458\/the-dating-divide\">The Dating Divide: Race and Desire in the Era of Online Romance,<\/a>\u201d sociologists\u00a0Jennifer Lundquist, Celeste Vaughan Curington and Ken Hou-Lin show how online dating sites exacerbate racial divisions.<\/p>\n<p>They found that race-related \u201cpreference\u201d filters on digital dating platforms help foster racist attitudes \u2014 especially toward black women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiltering out people based on race is a normal practice on dating apps,\u201d Lundquist told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of having racial preferences is unacceptable and illegal in any other arena,\u201d she added. \u201cBut it\u2019s literally built into the structure of these dating apps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/okcupid-race_n_5811840\">2014 study about dating preferences along racial lines<\/a> on OKCupid came to a similar conclusion: Black women had a hard time matching on dating apps, as did black and Asian men.<\/p>\n<p>(The 2014 study also found that preferring to date within one\u2019s race was fairly common. The authors declined to publicly reveal which digital dating platform they used for their research per a data-share agreement with the website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also conducted over 75 in-depth interviews with daters of diverse racial backgrounds and sexual identities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The authors found that racial filtering on mating forums exposed black women to more exclusion and rejection than white, Latina and Asian female daters. One possible explanation: When the average dating-app user doesn\u2019t see black women because of the filters they\u2019ve set, you end up with a higher percentage of users seeking black women as a \u201cfetish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Nicole, a 39-year-old Afro Caribbean single mother from Brooklyn, receiving overly sexual overtures from non-black men on apps has become an unwelcome norm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight off the bat these guys are approaching me with, \u2018Hey, sexy chocolate,\u2019 or \u2018I love your beautiful black body. Can you twerk?,\u2019\u201d the registered nurse told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole and other black daters who\u2019ve endured racist attitudes while online dating declined to share their full names with The Post for privacy reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m on these apps hoping to find a meaningful relationship and these guys are treating me like a sex object before even extending a proper \u2018Hello,\u2019\u201d the Brooklyn resident added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The authors found that black women on matchmaking platforms must frequently contend with racist stereotypes such as the sexually insatiable \u201cJezebel,\u201d which has roots in slavery, and the \u201cangry black woman\u201d \u2014 a belief that black women are innately unruly and ill-tempered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked to a number of educated black women who were thriving in their careers and looking for comparable partners,\u201d Curington told The Post.\u00a0\u201cBut there\u2019s a disconnect between who they are in real life versus the Jezebel stereotype they\u2019re being subjected to online.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m on these apps hoping to find a meaningful relationship and these guys are treating me like a sex object before even extending a proper \u2018Hello.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Nicole<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mish, a black executive assistant to C-suite business administrators, told The Post that her digital quest for companionship reaped a paltry handful of bad love connections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very turned off by dating sites now,\u201d the 53-year-old Bronx native insisted. \u201cThey make me feel uneasy. Like I\u2019m not being seen as the beautiful queen I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recalls one relationship with a Hispanic man that quickly turned sour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first met, he made a point of telling me how much he loved black women,\u201d Mish told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was sexually aggressive during their first in-person meet-up last year. After finally engaging in consensual sex, he ghosted her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She later discovered he had a sordid history of fetishizing black women for his personal pleasures, then dumping them once he\u2019d had his fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe targets black women because we\u2019re seen as sexual objects, nothing more,\u201d she said, noting that they never spoke again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Black gay men were also subjected to hypersexualized stereotypes, the authors found. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clark, a 26-year-old urban contemporary choreographer, told The Post his brush with racism ultimately got him banned from a leading dating app.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first this white guy was sweet,\u201d the Manhattan-based dancer explained. \u201cBut after a few messages, he asked for nude pictures to see \u2018if the rumors about black guys are true.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark responded to the request with a flurry of expletives. The man reported Clark to the app administrators for \u201ccyber bullying.\u201d Clark\u2019s dating profile was im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely deactivated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it when I saw my profile was gone. I had to create a whole new account,\u201d Clark told The Post. \u201cIt was like I was being attacked twice, once by the white guy and once by the app.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authors suggest doing away with racial filters on apps in order to eliminate the perpetuation of racial stereotyping and discrimination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, they note that their objective isn\u2019t to bash people for having a dating \u201ctype,\u201d nor is it to browbeat folks into dating outside of their race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not dumping on dating apps or people\u2019s individual choices,\u201d Curington told The Post. \u201cWe just want everyone to be aware of the long-standing societal issues being exacerbated on this platform.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
