It\u2019s the call of the Wilde.<\/p>\n

Despite a nearly decade age gap, Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles \u2014 she\u2019s 36 and he\u2019s 27 \u2014 recently made headlines<\/a> for moving in together.<\/p>\n

Once seen as desperate women on the prowl, cougars \u2014 the term for older women who date younger men, sometimes called cubs \u2014 are now considered confident, sexy creatures. And the guys they\u2019re attracted to tend to be progressive and respectful of their life experiences.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re also having a cultural moment, joining pandemic-era dating trends such as FaceTime courtship, rapid testing before making out and \u201cFauci-ing\u201d \u2014 the new expression for dumping someone who doesn\u2019t take COVID-19 seriously enough.<\/p>\n

On the newest season of TLC\u2019s hit \u201c90 Day Fianc\u00e9,\u201d Stephanie, 52, is shacking up with 27-year-old Ryan, from Brazil. Other famous cougar-cub pairings include Kris Jenner, 65, and her beau, Corey Gamble, 40, as well as First Couple of France<\/a> Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron, who enjoy a 25-year age gap. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere were quite a few \u2018boy toy\u2019 comments at the beginning,\u201d said Jennie Incavido, 41, who met her now-husband, Alejandro, 31, on Bumble three years ago. <\/p>\n

The Baltimore-based couple initially struggled with the age difference \u2014 she once posted<\/a> on Reddit, \u201chis love of YouTube<\/a> and video game<\/a>s annoys me\u201d \u2014 before getting hitched in March 2019. <\/p>\n

Initially, others didn\u2019t take them \u201cseriously,\u201d said Incavido. \u201cIt caused me to question our relationship at times.\u201d But she\u2019s witnessed a recent shift in attitudes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI notice that there\u2019s a lot more women who are older than their boyfriends than even a few months ago,\u201d Incavido said. \u00a0 <\/p>\n

Experts agree that the time at home has forced singles to confront what they really want out of a relationship, and that means abandoning outdated tropes, like that a dude should be the older one in a partnership.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been hearing from my women clients who say, \u2018I never realized how lonely I was, and I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happ<\/a>en to me,\u2019 so they\u2019re saying, \u2018Carpe diem,\u2019 \u201d said Dr. Richard Wolman, a Massachusetts-based psychologist who runs a matchmaking service <\/a>for older adults along with his wife Peggy. <\/p>\n

\u201cCOVID changed everyone\u2019s thinking from future-oriented to now-oriented,\u201d added Wolman, whose largely female clientele range in age from 35 to 90. In his experience, a five- to seven-year age difference in either direction used to be considered the norm for both genders. But \u201cpeople are more open now \u2014 the old boundaries are off,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

For Wilde and Styles, it\u2019s not so much the nine-year age difference that set tongues wagging, but the fact that Styles represents an appealing younger generation of enlightened guys who respect and revere their partners. Rather than Leonardo DiCaprio fawning over a co-ed model on a yacht, women today lust after a guy who has \u201chumility and grace,\u201d qualities Wilde ascribed to Styles<\/a> in a Feb. 16 Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle known fact: most male actors don\u2019t want to play supporting roles in female-led films,\u201d she wrote. \u201cNo joke, it is harrrrrd [sic] to find actors who recognize why it might be worth it to allow for a woman to hold the spotlight. Enter:\u00a0@harrystyles<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some women are enjoying a second youth with their younger partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sexuality had died during my marriage,\u201d said Karen, a high school teacher who declined to give her last name for privacy reasons. \u201cI was married for 20 years, and now let\u2019s just say I\u2019m making up for lost time.\u201d <\/p>\n

Karen, 59, is 30 years older than her husband Lucas, 29, an army vet who Karen stressed is financially independent.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t look like Cher, or the French president\u2019s wife. I\u2019m just a normal person, and we have normal jobs.\u201d <\/p>\n

The couple, who enjoy camping, travel<\/a>ing and going to bars, got married last September, after meeting a couple years back while fighting wildfires in California. <\/p>\n

Of their non-traditional coupling, Karen noted, \u201cWe\u2019re far from the only ones.\u201d Still, judgmental comments can be an issue. \u201cOne of our friends asked my now-husband, \u2018How\u2019s your old lady today?\u2019 which caused quite a stir.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Incavido, who is also on her second marriage, and has two children from her first, said, \u201cIt\u2019s very exciting to be with him \u2014 he took me to my first musical festival, and we went to Iceland.\u201d\u00a0 Still, she concedes, \u201cIt\u2019s always odd to hang out with his friends. I don\u2019t know the slang they use, so I just sit back and listen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The age gap can be apparent, too, when it comes to generational divides. \u201cI talk about life before cell phones, and living through the \u201960s and \u201970s. We didn\u2019t waste anything,\u201d said Karen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her 29-year-old hubby, on the other hand, tends to pick up and put down hobbies with abandon. \u201cFirst it was beekeeping, then we got cows, and now, we\u2019re starting a sequoia forest in our backyard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also sometimes worries about what the future holds. \u201cWe shy away from thinking about when I\u2019m 70 and 80, since he has serious concerns of losing me.\u201d But for now, she\u2019s enjoying the dynamic between her and her younger beau. <\/p>\n

\u201cI feel taken care of for the first time in my life, which doesn\u2019t have to do with the age gap, but who we are as people,\u201d said Karen. <\/p>\n

She added, \u201cAnd, of course, the sex is amazing.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
