Just a few months ago, New York\u2019s Emmy award-winning governor, Andrew Cuomo, app<\/a>eared to be riding high. His audaciously titled\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic<\/a>\u201d was released to high praise from The Washington Post, which described it as an \u201cimpressive road map to dealing with the crisis.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Amazon Books made the tome an Editors\u2019 Pick, intoning that\u00a0Cuomo provided the leadership needed to address the coronavirus threat, \u201cquickly becoming the standard-bearer of the organized response the country desperately needed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The broad, if ill-informed, praise has recently turned into withering criticism, as it\u2019s become clear that Cuomo lied about the number of victims sentenced by his decision to place patients suffering from coronavirus symptoms into New York\u2019s nursing homes.<\/p>\n

His prize-winning prose now blames everyone from nursing-home victims\u2019 kin to his rival Mayor de\u00a0Blasio. Democratic Assemblyman Ron Kim\u00a0says Cuomo threatened him after he, like the others, called for investigations into Cuomo\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

Faced with criticism, Cuomo has doubled down on his self-praise. That\u2019s a far cry from the path another New York governor, Nelson Rockefeller, took in the 1970s in the midst of another\u00a0nursing-home scandal.<\/p>\n

One of us, then-Assemblyman Andrew Stein, at the time led a two-year investigation into nursing-home corruption and mistreatment and met with the families of abused elders, leading to the creation of a special prosecutor. Rockefeller,\u00a0a Republican,\u00a0chose Stein,\u00a0a Democrat,\u00a0to head up a commission on the conditions of the elderly.<\/p>\n

Like Cuomo,\u00a0Rockefeller was possessed of a gargantuan ego, but he was secure in his own skin and able to learn from criticism.\u00a0Together, Stein and Rockefeller improved nursing-home care.\u00a0But Cuomo has refused to spend time with the victims\u2019 families.\u00a0He\u2019s no Nelson Rockefeller.<\/p>\n

The contrast goes further: Cuomo continually touted New York\u2019s performance \u2014 claiming, despite evidence to the contrary, that nursing homes here have done better than those in most other states, while resisting requests for a complete death toll.<\/p>\n

Yet state Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James, a fellow Democrat, blew the whistle, reporting that Cuomo had sharply underestimated the death toll and that his decision to force COVID-positive patients into nursing homes might\u2019ve pushed up fatalities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cuomo responded by offering what had previously brought him success: two-hour \u201cbriefings\u201d in which he asked and answered his own questions, plus cover from\u00a0CNN, where his brother Chris Cuomo, an anchor, popped softball questions. The governor also once again trotted out his go-to, all-purpose explanation: Evil Orange Man made me do it.<\/p>\n

Just days later, top Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa played another variant of the Orange Man theme \u2014 but inadvertently spilled the beans: The state\u2019s death numbers had to be minimized, she suggested, or the Trump people might use them against Cuomo & Co.<\/p>\n

Cuomo squirmed: He wasn\u2019t trying to cover up anything, he claimed. It\u2019s just that the state was slow in getting his numbers out,\u00a0leading to an \u201cinformational\u00a0void\u201d\u00a0and unfair, unfounded speculation.<\/p>\n

Had Cuomo chosen Rockefeller\u2019s path, met with nursing-home families and done the honorable thing, he might\u2019ve come clean and apologized for his errors.\u00a0Yet in the years since Rockefeller,\u00a0New York has become a one-party state run by Democrats, so Cuomo might not unreasonably assume he could tough it out \u2014 perhaps even eke out a fourth term.<\/p>\n

Yet even if Cuomo isn\u2019t held fully to account (as he wasn\u2019t when former US Attorney Preet Bahara refused to indict him, despite considerable evidence of his involvement in the Buffalo Billions scandal), he\u2019ll be nonetheless significantly weakened, assuming he manages to hold on to his office.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, nine Democratic<\/em> members of the Assembly accused Cuomo of federal obstruction of justice in a letter seeking support to\u00a0strip<\/a> him\u00a0of his COVID-19 emergency powers.\u00a0There may be no justice for the nursing-home patients,\u00a0but Cuomo\u2019s other disastrous, ungrounded policies \u2014 such as those that needlessly keep restaurants shut \u2014 may be brought to a halt.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The big losers, meanwhile, will be the mindless Democrats who\u2019ve worshiped Cuomo like bobby-soxers.<\/p>\n
