It\u2019s a bird, it\u2019s a plane, it\u2019s Tyler Hoechlin!<\/p>\n

The \u201cTeen Wolf\u201d star dons the famous red cape to play the latest incarnation of Clark Kent\/Superman in the new CW series<\/a> \u201cSuperman & Lois.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I understand a lot about Clark and Superman. Obviously not the powers, I wish I knew what it was like to fly \u2014 that would be great,\u201d Hoechlin, 33, told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he does the right thing when there\u2019s no reason other than \u2018Why not?\u2019 My folks raised us that way. I know you don\u2019t have to do the right thing all the time \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t make sense to me why you wouldn\u2019t. That\u2019s something about him that I connect to. And his eternal optimism.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up a romantic, then I became a cynic in my twenties and then realized that sucks,\u201d he said. \u201cI enjoy waking up in the morning and hoping that we will get there. Wherever there is that we\u2019re hoping\u2026so I app<\/a>reciate that about him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Tuesday, Feb. 23 (8 p.m.), the series is a more mature take on the famous story.\u00a0The pilot\u2019s opening showcases all the familiar beats \u2014 Clark\u2019s arrival on Earth as a baby and his idyllic childhood in Smallville; his move to Metropolis as a young man and his job at the Daily Planet; meeting and falling for scrappy journalist Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, \u201cGrimm\u201d). But after catching up to his adult life, the series gets to its main story in following Clark and Lois after they\u2019ve already been married for years and are parents to two teen boys.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really not a show about Superman, it\u2019s about a husband and a wife who are parents and the husband happens to be Superman,\u201d said Hoechlin. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting when you look at how someone that the world sees as this iconic figure \u2014 what does he look like to his children? Because Dad is always embarrassing. It\u2019s fun to play with that and see who they really are in those more intimate moments, when they\u2019re not playing this character for the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to \u201cTeen Wolf\u201d (2011-2017) and \u201c7th Heaven,\u201d (2003-2007), Hoechlin appeared in movies including the \u201980s period piece \u201cEverybody Wants Some!!\u201d Although \u201cSuperman & Lois\u201d is not his first time playing Superman \u2014 his rendition of the character has been around since 2016, appearing in The CW\u2019s other DC shows such as \u201cSupergirl,\u201d \u201cArrow,\u201d and \u201cThe Flash\u201d \u2014 \u201cSuperman & Lois\u201d marks the first time that he\u2019s gotten his own show.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery once in a while I have that moment where it hits you, \u2018I\u2019m wearing a cape today, that\u2019s what I\u2019m doing at work. I am wearing a cape today!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Before taking up acting, Hoechlin was on his way to a pro baseball career until an injury caused him to pivot to Hollywood. He said it taught him persistence, which he\u2019s brought to his current career (\u201cbaseball is a game<\/a> of failure and so is this business \u2014 you take a lot of swings and only get a few hits\u201d).<\/p>\n

For that reason, he said he hasn\u2019t seen past onscreen Supermen such as Henry Cavill, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain or Christoper Reeve.<\/p>\n

\u201c[My exposure to other Supermen] was very little if I\u2019m being completely honest,\u201d he said. \u201cI was playing baseball competitively and working as an actor from the time I was young. I had other interests, but not many that I could put much time into.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve intentionally stayed away [from Superman since getting the role],\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve found it more beneficial to have an impulse and trust it without the hesitation of, \u2018Oh, so-and-so already did that.\u2019 It makes it easier to just go do my thing without overthinking it. Since it wasn\u2019t something that I grew up so close to, it allows me to play it without that pressure.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
