Republicans are trying to recruit Long Island Congressman Lee Zeldin to run against three-term Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo next year, as the governor grapp<\/a>les with a growing pandemic-fueled nursing home scandal, party officials said Friday.<\/p>\n

Among the GOP insiders wooing Zeldin to take on Cuomo for the governorship is Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy, sources said.<\/p>\n

The Republican National Committee \u2014 sensing that Cuomo is on the ropes over accusations that he hid crucial COVID-19 nursing home death data \u2014 also is interested in recruiting a strong candidate for governor in 2020.<\/p>\n

Zeldin is an Iraq military vet who was handily re-elected last November to a fourth term representing Suffolk County\u2019s 1st Congressional District.<\/p>\n

He previously served in the state Senate and has called on the Justice Department to examine Cuomo\u2019s actions regarding nursing homes.<\/p>\n

Zeldin, 41, would have issues of his own to address should he take on Cuomo.<\/p>\n

He voted against certifiying Joe Biden\u2019s election after a mob of pro-Trump supporters broke into the Capitol Building on Jan. 6 \u2014 an issue that might turn off many Democrats in blue New York.<\/p>\n

Zeldin defended his vote on the House floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cRogue election officials, secretaries of state, and courts circumvented state election laws,\u201d Zeldin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey made massive changes to how their state\u2019s election would be run. These acts, among other issues, were unlawful and unconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n

A source close to Langworthy said the chairman believes Zeldin\u2019s strength in the purple suburbs of Long Island could make him an attractive candidate statewide.<\/p>\n

Former GOP Gov. George Pataki won three races by dominating the suburbs as well as upstate. But he\u2019s the last Republican to be elected in a statewide race in 2002 \u2014 two decades ago.<\/p>\n

Republicans also believe that Cuomo is really tarnished by the nursing home scandal.<\/p>\n

\u201cCuomo has fallen so far, so fast,\u201d a GOP official said.<\/p>\n

Even some fellow Democrats accuse Cuomo of obstructing justice for hiding for months the extent of nursing home residents killed by COVID-19, while others have called for strip<\/a>ping him of emergency powers the Legislature granted him last year to address the pandemic<\/p>\n

Cuomo denies any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

State Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs scoffed when he heard of Zeldin potentially taking on Cuomo.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Republicans nominate Lee Zeldin for governor, I\u2019ll contribute to his campaign. He\u2019d be perfect us,\u201d said Jacobs, a Cuomo ally.<\/p>\n

\u201cZelden has supported Donald Trump down the line,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said many voters will be turned off by Zeldin\u2019s refusal to certify Biden\u2019s victory after the Capitol riot last month.<\/p>\n

Fox News<\/a> first reported <\/a>Friday on Zeldin\u2019s name being floated as a potential GOP gubernatorial candidate.\n <\/div>\n
