When it\u2019s bright outside, you want to turn it up so you can see. When you\u2019re in a dark room, you\u2019ll want it dim so it doesn\u2019t hurt your eyes.\u00a0Decreasing your screen brightness will also help you save power and increase your laptop\u2019s\u00a0battery life.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from manually changing the screen brightness, you can have Windows change it automatically in a variety of ways. Windows can change it based on whether you\u2019re plugged in, based on how much battery power you have left, or using an ambient light\u00a0sensor built into many\u00a0modern devices.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Adjust_Brightness_Manually_on_a_Laptop_or_Tablet\"><\/span>How to Adjust Brightness Manually on a Laptop or Tablet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On most laptop keyboards, you\u2019ll find shortcut keys that allow you to quickly increase and decrease your brightness. Often, these keys are part of the row of F-keys\u2013that\u2019s F1 through F12\u2013that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear above the\u00a0number row on your keyboard. This is especially helpful if your keyboard doesn\u2019t have these keys, or if you\u2019re using a tablet and you have to do it within software.<\/p>\n<p>On Windows 10, you can find a quick brightness slider in the Action Center. To access it, click or tap the notification bubble icon that appears to the right of the clock on the taskbar. If you don\u2019t see the slider, click the \u201cExpand\u201d option above the grid of tiles. Launch it\u00a0by right-clicking the Start button on Windows 10 and 8.1 and selecting \u201cMobility Center,\u201d or pressing the Windows key + X on Windows 7. However, if you\u2019re using a desktop PC with an external display\u2013or even connecting an external display to a laptop or tablet\u2013you\u2019ll need to adjust this setting on the external display itself, and you usually won\u2019t be able to do it automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Look for \u201cbrightness\u201d buttons on the display and use them to adjust the display brightness. \u00a0You may instead\u00a0need to press some sort of \u201cMenu\u201d or \u201cOptions\u201d button before you can access an on-screen display that will allow you to\u00a0increase or decrease the brightness. You\u2019ll often find these buttons near the power button on a\u00a0computer monitor. With\u00a0some monitors, you may also be able to adjust your screen\u2019s brightness with an app like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.softpedia.com\/get\/Desktop-Enhancements\/Other-Desktop-Enhancements\/ScreenBright.shtml\">ScreenBright<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.softpedia.com\/get\/Tweak\/Video-Tweak\/Display-Tuner.shtml\">Display Tuner<\/a>, though they\u00a0won\u2019t work with all monitors.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Automatically_Adjust_Brightness_When_Youre_Plugged_In\"><\/span>How to Automatically Adjust Brightness\u00a0When You\u2019re Plugged In<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Should You Use the Balanced, Power Saver, or High Performance Power Plan on Windows?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can set different display brightness levels on your laptop or tablet based on whether or not you\u2019re plugged into an outlet or not. For example, you could have it set to a high brightness level when you\u2019re plugged in, and a lower one when you\u2019re on battery power. Windows\u00a0would then automatically adjust your brightness.<\/p>\n<p>To adjust this, open the Control Panel. Select \u201cHardware and Sound,\u201d select \u201cPower Options,\u201d and click the \u201cChange plan settings\u201d link next to the power plan you\u2019re using. You\u2019re probably\u00a0using the Balanced power plan.<\/p>\n<p>Configure different screen brightness levels for \u201cOn battery\u201d and \u201cPlugged in\u201d under \u201cAdjust plan brightness.\u201d\u00a0This setting is tied to your power plan. On Windows 10, you can use the Battery Saver feature\u00a0to do this. Open the Settings app, select \u201cSystem,\u201d and select \u201cBattery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ensure the \u201cLower screen brightness while in battery saver\u201d option is enabled, and then choose the\u00a0percentage at which you\u2019d like Battery Saver to kick in. When Battery Saver activates\u00a0at that level, it will decrease\u00a0your backlight and saving you power. By default, Battery Saver kicks in when you have\u00a020% battery remaining.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there\u2019s no way to adjust the exact brightness level Battery Saver will choose. Windows can use the sensor for \u201cadaptive brightness,\u201d automatically increasing\u00a0your display brightness when you\u2019re in a bright area, and decreasing\u00a0the brightness when you\u2019re in a dark room.<\/p>\n<p>This is convenient, but some people find that it gets in the way, too. It may automatically decrease or increase your display brightness when you don\u2019t want it to, and you may prefer managing brightness manually with the settings above. You may want to try it on and off to decide which you like better.<\/p>\n<p>To enable or disable this feature on Windows 10, open the Settings app, select \u201cSystem,\u201d and select \u201cDisplay.\u201d Turn the\u00a0\u201cChange brightness automatically when lighting changes\u201d option on or off.\u00a0You\u2019ll only see this option if your device has an ambient brightness sensor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-241794 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/img_56b80daf1b607.png\" alt=\"The &quot;Change brightness automatically when lighting changes&quot; option in Windows 10's Settings app.\" width=\"650\" height=\"167\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u00a0can change this setting through the Control Panel, too. Open the Control Panel, select \u201cHardware and sound,\u201d select \u201cPower Options,\u201d click \u201cChange plan settings\u201d next to the power plan you\u2019re using, and click \u201cChange advanced power settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expand the \u201cDisplay\u201d section here, and then expand the \u201cEnable adaptive brightness\u201d section.\u00a0The options here let you control whether adaptive brightness is used when you\u2019re on battery or when you\u2019re plugged in.
