Gov. Cuomo didn\u2019t just \u201cwildly mismanage\u201d his state\u2019s COVID response, \u201cwhile netting himself a lucrative book deal and an Emmy. He did something worse,\u201d explains The Guardian\u2019s David Sirota<\/a>: \u201cHe used his office to help one of his largest political donors shield itself\u201d as \u201c15,000 nursing-home residents died from COVID-19\u201d \u2014 and then underreported that death toll. In total, \u201cCuomo\u2019s political machine received more than $2 million from the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA), its executives and its lobbying firms.\u201d And in April, he pushed through a \u201cprovision shielding hospital and nursing-home executives from legal consequences if their corporate decisions killed people during the pandemic.\u201d This month, his top aide, Melissa DeRosa, admitted the administration \u201cnot only withheld information about nursing-home deaths, but did so in order to preemptively avoid political and legal consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Exposing Dems\u2019 Anti-Cop Bias<\/strong><\/p>\n

The left\u2019s embrace of people like Dyjuan Tatro, a senior adviser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, \u201cis evidence of a broader problem with how Democratic leaders talk about law enforcement,\u201d argues Commentary\u2019s Christine Rosen<\/a>. Tatro has \u201ccompared cops to Nazis,\u201d labeled Capitol police \u201cwhite supremacists\u201d and \u201cunequivocally praised the lawlessness and destruction\u201d of the George Floyd riots. When Minneapolis defunded its police, \u201cthe resulting surge in violent crime could not be ignored.\u201d Meanwhile, \u201cPresident Joe Biden\u2019s administration has shown a willingness to embrace those who promote vitriol directed at law enforcement,\u201d and Democrats have ignored both the nationwide violent crime spike and the ongoing anti-cop protests. Yet if Democrats are serious about \u201cinclusion,\u201d they shouldn\u2019t \u201celevate people who indiscriminately slander law enforcement as white supremacists and Nazis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Scorsese\u2019s Cinema Blind Spot<\/strong><\/p>\n

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese complains a lot \u201cabout the state of cinema,\u201d but \u201cthe source of his dyspepsia\u201d is that \u201che isn\u2019t 17 anymore,\u201d National Review\u2019s Kyle Smith contends<\/a>. Scorsese fondly remembers movies<\/a> of his teens, but \u201can error nostalgists often make is to be blinded to how much things have stayed the same.\u201d Scorsese warns that \u201cstreaming services are treating cinema as \u2018mere property to be exploited,\u2019\u200a\u201d yet he might rejoice \u201cat the innovations that have opened up the film vaults.\u201d Cinema \u201cis far more accessible to the average person today,\u201d and if Scorsese can\u2019t see that, it\u2019s because \u201che faces the same danger as any other 78-year-old of becoming . . . overly attached to the past and resistant to change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s rights champ: PRO Act\u2019s Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pandemic eroded women\u2019s gains in the labor force, and now \u201ca new pro-labor bill threatens women\u2019s advancement further,\u201d warns Patrice Onwuka at Real Clear Politics<\/a>. The bill, called the Protect the Right to Organize Act, restricts independent contracting, even though such arrangements are vital to women, allowing them to earn money and \u201cadvance their careers while balancing competing priorities of child care, virtual learning or caring for aging parents.\u201d A 2018 survey shows \u201cflexibility is important to 94 percent of working women in the gig economy.\u201d Women who can\u2019t work \u201cin these flexible arrangements\u201d will leave the workforce. \u201cIf Congress supports women\u2019s progress and equality, it will oppose the PRO Act.\u201d<\/p>\n

Energy desk: A Return to Common Sense<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201ccold front spreading suffering and inconvenience\u201d through Texas ensures that the debate over energy and climate policy \u201cis going to be a mean one,\u201d predicts William Murchison at Spectator USA<\/a>. For one thing, underlying the question of whether the US energy market suffers from \u201ctoo much regulation\u201d is \u201cthe strategic question of what we should be doing about climate change\u201d in the first place. But if Texas proves that \u201cthere\u2019s too little energy available to keep America safe from the ravages of winter and summer,\u201d the obvious solution is \u201cmore energy.\u201d Americans once knew that \u201cwhen you need more of something, you go out and get it.\u201d Recent events in Texas can do much to restore \u201ccommon sense of the generous old kind.\u201d<\/p>\n
