Ari Aster<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Midsommar<\/em> <\/strong>was already long to begin with, but the director\u2019s cut clocks in at a whopping 171 minutes. While the director\u2019s cut was previously screened in select theaters and has been available to purchase digitally, it hasn\u2019t been made available on Blu-ray in the U.S. \u2013 until now. A24 is releasing a special edition\u00a0Midsommar<\/em> director\u2019s cut on 4K in July, complete with new artwork and a written foreword by none other than\u00a0Martin Scorsese<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of Ari Aster\u2019s\u00a0Midsommar<\/em>. It\u2019s a big, bold, ambitious blend of horror and comedy featuring a killer lead performance from Florence Pugh<\/strong>. But as much as I love the film, I have yet to see the director\u2019s cut. Sure, I could\u2019ve purchased the cut digitally by now, but I\u2019m a stickler for physical media<\/a>. And while the director\u2019s cut has been available on Blu-ray overseas, I\u2019ve been holding out for a U.S. release. Thankfully, it looks like my patience has paid off, because A24 is finally releasing the director\u2019s cut here in the states \u2013 and on 4K, to boot.<\/p>\n

The 4K director\u2019s cut comes \u201cenclosed in a hardcover, clothbound slipcase and includes an illustrated book featuring a foreword by Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and original artworks from the film by artist Ragnar Persson<\/strong>.\u201d In the past, Scorsese has professed his love for Aster\u2019s debut feature\u00a0Hereditary<\/em>, and it looks like that love extends to\u00a0Midsommar<\/em> as well.<\/p>\n

This 171-minute cut promises to offer \u201ca richer sampling of Aster\u2019s psychedelic vision in its most unadulterated (and unrated!) form.\u201d There will also be a standard edition of the Blu-ray if you don\u2019t have a 4K player.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Midsommar<\/em>, \u201cA couple travel<\/a> to Sweden to visit their friend\u2019s rural hometown for its fabled midsummer festival, but what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.\u201d I imagine by now everyone knows what happ<\/a>ens in the film, even if you haven\u2019t seen it. That said, if you\u2019re somehow still in the dark, but curious about watching, I urge you to go in as cold as you possibly can for maximum surprise. Trust me, it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Midsommar<\/em> director\u2019s cut will ship by July 20<\/strong>, 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
