New York\u2019s top state legislators turned up the heat on Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday for stonewalling lawmakers over the total tally of nursing home residents killed by COVID-19.<\/p>\n

In nearly identical statements from their spokespeople, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-The Bronx) pushed back against Cuomo\u2019s suggestion that they were OK with his administration withholding the data.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understood there was a delay, but there was no agreement, nor were we asked to agree. We wanted information and we continued to push for the information,\u201d Stewart-Cousins\u2019 spokesman Mike Murphy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd unfortunately, we believed they would get us the information we requested.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Whyland, the spokesman for Democratic Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie\u00a0 (D-The Bronx), also said, \u201cWe didn\u2019t agree to anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never stopped asking for the information and we were under the belief that we would get it, but unfortunately that never happ<\/a>ened,\u201d Whyland added.<\/p>\n

Last week, The Post exclusively revealed that Cuomo\u2019s top aide, Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa, privately told Democratic lawmakers that his administration rebuffed their August request for the numbers due to a pending federal probe.<\/p>\n

At a press conference earlier Friday, Cuomo said, \u201cI said to the legislative leaders, \u2018Yes, I understand state legislators are offended in not getting the information, I get it. And we have a lot of work to do and I want to take the tone down, and we have to do a budget, we have to do vaccinations. We have a lot of important work to do together, and that\u2019s what we should be focused on.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo also claimed that \u201cthey had all the numbers\u201d because \u201cthere are two basic numbers: How many people died in hospitals and how many people died in nursing homes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo\u2019s administration refused to reveal the number of nursing home residents who died of COVID-19 in hospitals until Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James last month released a scathing report that estimated doing so would increase the number of those who died in nursing homes by more than 50 percent.<\/p>\n

Within hours, Health Commissioner Howard Zucker finally released figures that showed nearly 13,000 total fatalities, up from less than 9,000 a day earlier.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
