Guilbeault is charged with drafting legislation in the next few months that would require Facebook and Alphabet Inc\u2019s Google to pay up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada is at the forefront of this battle \u2026 we are really among the first group of countries around the world that are doing this,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/australia-media-facebook-canada\/canada-vows-to-be-next-country-to-go-after-facebook-to-pay-for-news-idUSL1N2KO28F\">Guilbeault told reporters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Guilbeault said he recently met with government ministers from Australia, Finland, France and Germany to hammer out a common front with respect to Google and Facebook, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-condemns-facebooks-highly-irresponsible-australian-news-ban\/\">the Globe and Mail reported.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the first ministerial meeting where we jointly started talking about what we want to do together regarding web giants, including fair compensation for media. We believe that there\u2019s real strength in unity on that,\u201d he said, adding that the growing coalition of countries opposed to Facebook and Google could soon reach 15. \u201cI\u2019m a bit curious to see what Facebook\u2019s response will be. Is Facebook going to cut ties with Germany, with France, with Canada, with Australia and other countries that will join? Last week, Canadian lawmaker Alexandre Boulerice introduced a motion in the House of Commons condemning Facebook\u2019s actions, saying that \u201cFacebook\u2019s intimidation\u201d has no place in a democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing a very significant turning point in challenging the monopoly that big tech is wielding,\u201d said Megan Boley, a professor of media studies at the University of Toronto in an interview with The Post. \u201cRight now, they are deciding what is truth for the whole world. What\u2019s exciting is that this is an issue that countries can unite on and hold Facebook and Google accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But others took to Twitter to blast Guilbeault\u2019s plan. \u201cIf you force companies to pay for every link they make to another site you are in essence breaking the internet,\u201d<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattolan\/status\/1362988526116114433\"> tweeted @mattolan.<\/a> \u201cThis hurts Canadian media; it doesn\u2019t help it. Following the Australian <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach would allow Canada\u2019s publishers to recoup nearly $500 million. That approach would require the tech giants to reach deals to pay news outlets whose links to stories drive users to their sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t able to provide a reaction to proposed legislation until we have seen a draft,\u201d said Kevin Chan, Global Director and Head of Public Policy, Facebook Canada, in a statement. \u201cWe believe there are other options to support news in Canada that will more fairly benefit publishers of all sizes and recognize the value that platforms bring to news organizations.
