The night their dad got shot in 1980 was a typical evening for NYPD cop Harry Ryman\u2019s five teen kids.<\/p>\n

Dinner at six sharp. The whole family.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you better not be late,\u201d said his daughter Margaret. \u201cThat was my mother\u2019s rule.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryman, who worked anti-crime in Coney Island and made extra money moonlighting in security, ate with them, all seven Rymans at the same table, then conked out and was asleep with his wife Dorothy in the front bedroom\u00a0of their brick two-family in Flatlands when she heard a noise at 3:40 a.m.<\/p>\n

The officer looked across East 49th Street and saw a young man breaking into his neighbor\u2019s muscle car, a rust-colored\u00a0Mercury Montego.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe grabbed his gun and his badge and ran out,\u201d Margaret said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ryman, still in his pajamas, confronted the suspect, Paul Ford, who had come to Brooklyn from Jamaica.<\/p>\n

Ford fired a gun at Ryman and missed. The cop fired back with his off-duty .38 revolver, hitting the car\u2019s front center console.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo he went around to the back of the car and shot at Ford through the back windshield,\u201d said his son, Eddie.<\/p>\n

This time Ryman didn\u2019t miss. He struck the car thief in the head.<\/p>\n

Ford\u2019s two pals, also armed, were nearby in a different stolen car and came running when they heard the gunfire.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just opened up,\u201d said Eddie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His dad took three bullets to the chest and went down.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a nightmare,\u201d said Margaret, which she and her siblings are reliving after a parole board ruled to spring Ford, who spent 42 years in jail for murder, next month.<\/p>\n

A collapsed Ryman was thrust into a patrol car and rushed to Kings County Hospital. Dorothy and Margaret\u2019s sister Nora rode with him.<\/p>\n

There, moments later, Nora saw Ford\u2019s gunmen pals, Barrington Young and Cornelius Bucknor, carry Ford into the ER.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey dropped him on the floor,\u201d said Eddie.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sister said, \u2018That\u2019s them!\u2019 And the cops chased them and caught them outside the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

The surgeon who tried to save Ryman lived down the block from the cop.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said one of the bullets pierced his aorta,\u201d said Eddie. \u201cThat\u2019s what got him.\u201d <\/p>\n

Doctors managed to save Ford, though he was left with impaired vision.<\/p>\n

Margaret can\u2019t understand why Ford is about to get out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always\u00a0believe that as victims of a crime, especially the children\u00a0of a murdered police officer, we would have a voice. We would be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

She blames Gov. Cuomo.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder this new program of parole reform, there\u2019s so much emphasis on the inmates. They have more rights than we do. Cuomo has really made it a point to silence us. He\u2019s picked every one of the parole commissioners. He wants everyone let out. Well, if the governor really believes they deserve\u00a0a second chance, let\u2019s build a great building for them behind the governor\u2019s\u00a0mansion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ford, 58, who had previously aimed a shotgun at a cop and nearly beat an elderly man to death after robbing him, has not been a model inmate at Sullivan County.<\/p>\n

He assaulted a prison staffer and set multiple fires while locked up, according to parole hearing minutes obtained by The Post.<\/p>\n

Ford was just the kind of troubled young man Ryman liked to help, Margaret said.<\/p>\n

At her dad\u2019s funeral, she met two strangers.<\/p>\n

The men had been arrested by her father years earlier,\u00a0they told\u00a0her, and had come to pay their respects.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018He was nice to us.\u2019 He went and bought them Nathan\u2019s hot dogs. He said, \u2018Make better choices.\u2019 And they did.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
