TAMPA \u2014 Aaron Boone called the pitchers the Yankees have in camp this spring as good as any they have had in his four years as manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do feel like this is, hands down, the deepest group of arms [we\u2019ve had] since I\u2019ve been here,\u2019\u2019 Boone said Saturday. \u201cAlmost across the board, guys are standing out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, this comes after just three days of throwing, so unless someone grabs their elbow or has to head to an MRI machine, news<\/a> is general<\/a>ly good this time of year.<\/p>\n

But considering the injury history of some of the newcomers, any day when there are no setbacks is a good one.<\/p>\n

Though Boone declined to single out any pitchers for having especially good stuff, saying, \u201cCheck back with me in a couple of days,\u2019\u2019 <\/p>\n

Kyle Higashioka obliged.<\/p>\n

\u201cI caught [Jameson] Taillon the other day and he looked really good,\u2019\u2019 Higashioka said. \u201cI was really impressed. The fastball was jumping out of his hand. The breaking ball looks good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Higashioka is excited to see what both Taillon \u2014 coming off a second Tommy John surgery \u2014 and Corey Kluber, who\u2019s coming off a shoulder injury that limited him to one inning a year ago, can do.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve signed some guys who have some pretty darn good track records in the past,\u2019\u2019 Higashioka said of catching the veteran right-handers. \u201cIt\u2019s important for us to learn what makes them the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chad Green has never met Justin Wilson, but their careers are linked and they will be teammates as soon as Wilson\u2019s deal with the Yankees becomes official.<\/p>\n

Green came to the Yankees \u2014 along with Luis Cessa \u2014 from the Tigers in exchange for Wilson following the 2015 season.<\/p>\n

At the time, Wilson was coming off a solid season with the Yankees \u2014 his only year in The Bronx after arriving in a trade from the Pirates for Francisco Cervelli. Green, at the time, had yet to pitch above Double-A.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so young, I didn\u2019t know how the business worked,\u2019\u2019 Green said of his trade to the Yankees. \u201cIt will definitely be a full-circle moment when I actually do meet him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson is one of the additions to the bullpen that also brought in Darren O\u2019Day, while losing Adam Ottavino and Jonathan Holder.<\/p>\n

Major League Baseball managed to get through last year despite the COVID-19 pandemic, but that was with the help of a 60-game<\/a> regular season with limited travel<\/a> and a playoff bubble. Now they\u2019re hoping to play a 162-game schedule and postseason, with regular travel.<\/p>\n

Higashioka said he thinks the players will be able to withstand the protocols over a full season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a little more familiar now to us because we\u2019re used to the protocols,\u2019\u2019 Higashioka said. \u201cI think it\u2019ll be easier to weather a full season with the protocols and hopefully things get better as we go along, too. I think we\u2019re all, this time around, much more prepared to deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boone called recently signed catcher Robinson Chirinos \u201ca pro.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe brings a lot to the table,\u2019\u2019 Boone said of the 36-year-old, who finished last season with the Mets. \u201cHe\u2019s still in obviously excellent shape. He\u2019s had a really good impact.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
