Luxembourg\u00a0is a\u00a0landlocked country located in\u00a0central Europe between\u00a0France (to West and south) Germany (East) and Belgium (North). Curious trivia fact: it\u2019s\u00a0the smallest country\u00a0bordered\u00a0by 3 countries.<\/p>\n<p>#2 Luxembourg is a representative democracy with a constitutional monarch, however, the interesting part is that it\u2019s a Grand-Duchy, because the head of state isn\u2019t a king but a Grand-Duke. These immigrants come from their neighbors\u00a0(Germany, France, and Belgium) but also from Portugal and Italy. In fact, Portuguese are the largest foreign group in Luxembourg with almost 20% of the Luxembourger population being from Portuguese ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>#4 There is\u00a0also\u00a0a big\u00a0community of\u00a0ex-Yugoslavian\u00a0countries and small communities of Africans and Asians. This is truly a multi-cultural society. The climate in\u00a0Luxembourg\u00a0is\u00a0considered moderated continental climate with\u00a0cold winters and mild Summers.<\/p>\n<p>May to August are the warmer months with longer hours of sun, which means that is the best time of the year to visit Luxembourg. Nevertheless, bring warm clothes and raincoats\/umbrellas, it usually rains and the summer nights are cold.<\/p>\n<p>#6 Luxembourg (together with Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, and Italy) is one of the founding members of the European Coal and Steel Community, which is considered to be \u201ca first step to the EEC and later to the EU and Eurozone. It ranks second on the list only behind Qatar as the highest GDP per capita. This richness comes mainly from their banking system and low taxes on holding companies which means that a lot of the biggest companies in the world have their European headquarters in Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<p>#8 There are many people working in Luxembourg and living in neighbor countries.\u00a0 It\u2019s estimated that roughly 100 000 people (German, Belgian and mostly French) cross the border every day to work in Luxembourg. Incredibly, most people\u00a0actually speak the 3 languages making it a de facto trilingual country.<\/p>\n<p>You may have never heard Luxembourgish but it\u2019s very similar to German, in fact, in the past, it used to be considered a dialect of German.<\/p>\n<p>#10 One cool thing about the languages of Luxembourg is the fact that in the streets or stores you see the 3 languages\u2026 Sometimes you see things written in two languages, sometimes in only one\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s casual, but it shows how Luxembourgers\u00a0change between the three languages naturally. It\u2019s not difficult to find a Luxembourger who speaks 4 or 5 languages. So, you probably won\u2019t find many problems communicating here\u2026 at least we didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>#12 When meeting a Luxembourger and you want to greet him\/her with a kiss, you should give him\/her not one, not two, but thee kisses! Yeah, it\u2019s weird\u2026 but it\u2019s their thing \ud83d\ude42 In fact, I kind of like\u2026 well\u2026 sometimes\u2026 let\u2019s move on!<\/p>\n<p>#13 Alike Belgium Luxemburg doesn\u2019t really have mountains. The highest point doesn\u2019t even have 600 meters of altitude. We were never charged with ATM fees in Luxembourg but we are not sure if we were just lucky or if it\u2019s free everywhere. Anyhow, if the ATM tells you that will charge you any fee, just go to the one next door.<\/p>\n<p>#39 Debit cards are accepted in basically everywhere. Be aware that credit cards may not be accepted in smaller businesses or you will be charge charged up to 5%.<\/p>\n<p>#40 Supermarkets are expensive when compared to other countries but cheaper than eating in a restaurant. So if you are on a budget you should consider buying food there.
