Messages for important announcements can often get lost in a crowded WhatsApp group, especially when everyone is typing at the same time. But if you\u2019re an admin, here\u2019s how you can pause public chatter by restricting the ability to send messages to yourself.<\/p>\n

Launch the WhatsApp app on your Android<\/a>\u00a0smartphone, tablet, or iPhone<\/a>, and from under the \u201cChats\u201d tab, enter your group chat.<\/p>\n

Tap the group\u2019s name at the top of the conversation to view its profile page.<\/p>\n

Scroll down and select \u201cGroup Settings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tap \u201cSend Messages.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Control<\/p>\n

Switch it to the \u201cOnly Admins\u201d option. Select the \u201cOK\u201d button to save the new setting.<\/p>\n

Now, only the admins have the right to send a message in your WhatsApp group chat. The rest of the members\u2019 access will be downgraded to read-only.<\/p>\n

Once you update this preference, WhatsApp will add an alert message in the group conversation to inform the participants of the change. For members, the usual compose text field at the bottom will also be replaced with a fixed note that says \u201cOnly admins can send messages.\u201d The group\u2019s past history of messages, however, won\u2019t be affected.<\/p>\n

To go back to the group chat\u2019s previous state, you will have to return to the \u201cGroup Settings\u201d menu and switch back to \u201cAll Participants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since admins are in control of this group setting, you can even flip back and forth between the two choices. When you have information to share that you need to make sure everyone reads, you can disable public messages and enable them again later.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, if you\u2019re just fed up with your phone constantly buzzing due to a chatty group, you can consider silencing WhatsApp group notifications or muting a chat indefinitely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
