We asked recruiters and experts about their must-haves and grievances.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Be_discreet\"><\/span>Be discreet <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Eliminating distractions is key \u2014 including exiting a work call before your interview. Last March, Mollie Leonard, head of people at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mediaplanet.com\/\">Mediaplanet<\/a>, a global firm delivering content marketing campaigns in Midtown, attended a companywide meeting with about 60 people on Zoom when an entry-level employee neglected to mute herself during an external job interview. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of a sudden, the sound of the call switched from the speaker\u2019s voice to this employee who was interviewing for another job. We heard the employee answering the question, \u2018Why are you looking to leave your current role?\u2019 loud and clear.\u201d Afterward, the employee\u2019s manager and Leonard approached her, and she apologized \u201cextensively.\u201d (She eventually left the company for another opportunity.)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ask_insightful_questions\"><\/span>Ask insightful questions <br \/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lisa Vasquez-Fedrizzi, managing director of people and action at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cheerpartners.com\/\">Cheer Partners<\/a>, an employee experience agency in West Babylon, Long Island, said candidates are asking thoughtful questions which show they\u2019re invested in roles. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re asking if they\u2019re going to be treated as an equal partner, do they have a place at the table?\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re asking in-depth questions about the day-to-day role. This makes me know the person is prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_phone_audio_and_computer_video\"><\/span>Use phone audio and computer video<br \/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Gorick Ng, author of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Unspoken-Rules-Secrets-Starting-Career\/dp\/1647820448?tag=nypost-20\">The Unspoken Rules: Secrets To Starting Your Career Off Right\u201d (Harvard Business Review Press)<\/a> out in April, said to consider this if you have a weak Internet connection. Enter the Zoom room using video, but click the \u201ccall me\u201d button instead of the \u201cjoin with computer audio\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only will others be able to hear you clearly, but in the event your video cuts out, you can still hear and talk,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can mute and unmute yourself without others seeing the microphone icon disappear and reappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arrive_on_time\"><\/span>Arrive on time <br \/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Terri Wein, partner at Midtown-based global career advisory firm<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/weilandwein.com\/\"> Weil &amp; Wein<\/a>, said, \u201cFor some reason, many people would never show up for an in-person interview in the nick of time, but think it\u2019s fine to pop into a Zoom appointment a minute late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Make a note: It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_phone_a_friend\"><\/span>Don\u2019t phone a friend<br \/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ian (last name withheld for professional reasons), a senior recruiter at an insurance company in East Brunswick, New Jersey, conducted a Webex interview with a database analyst candidate who secretly enlisted a virtual helper. \u201cThe hiring manager asked technical questions, and there\u2019s this lag time between his mouth moving and the answers. The voices didn\u2019t match. He had someone on the phone!\u201d he said. He must have missed my memo to be quiet at 10 a.m. today,\u2019\u2009\u201d said Wein.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Show_and_tell\"><\/span>Show and tell <br \/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Michael Balush, senior vice president of customer development and talent acquisition leader at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/powerhrg.com\/\">Power Home Remodeling<\/a>, in Melville interviewed an entry-level sales candidate who was a former collegiate basketball player. \u201cHe positioned himself in front of all of his sports trophies, framed articles and awards,\u201d he said.
