The White House has begun to communicate with Iran about its detention of US citizens, an official said Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have begun to communicate with the Iranians on this issue,\u201d national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d<\/p>\n

He called the country\u2019s imprisonment of dozens of dual nationals in recent years, including several Americans, a \u201ccomplete and utter outrage\u201d and said it was a \u201csignificant priority\u201d of the Biden administration to get them \u201csafely back home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not accept a long-term proposition where they continue to hold Americans in an unjust and unlawful manner,\u201d Sullivan said, calling it a \u201chumanitarian catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sullivan added that President Biden was determined to use diplomacy to prevent the authoritarian government from acquiring nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

United Nations watchdogs found\u00a0uranium particles at two Iranian sites\u00a0it inspected last week, which could endanger efforts by President Biden to restore Iran\u2019s 2015 nuclear deal. The pact was abandoned by the Trump administration in favor of sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran has not yet responded,\u201d to the new administration\u2019s overture, Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry said Sunday that the US cannot rejoin the nuclear pact until it lifts economic penalties. Washington said Tehran must take the first step by complying with the accord and limiting nuclear activities.<\/p>\n
