\n Council Speaker Corey Johnson revealed Tuesday that anti-police demonstrators have harassed his boyfriend \u2014 even vandalizing his building in Williamsburg \u2014 as protests over NYPD funding intensified in recent days.<\/p>\n

\u201cI support people having the right to protest and expressing themselves, I think social<\/a> justice movements have been fueled by that,\u201d Johnson (D-Manhattan) told reporters during his press conference after Mayor Bill de Blasio revealed the budget deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, the vandalism of where my significant other lives, and the ringing of his buzzer at all hours in the middle of the night \u2014 he\u2019s not a public figure. I am,\u201d the speaker continued. \u201cAnd even though it\u2019s not great sometimes, I recognize that I\u2019m a public figure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been personally painful, I don\u2019t want to sugar coat it,\u201d Johnson said, of the harassment. \u201cThis has been hard and trying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson and his beau, Ernest Martin, went public with their relationship last summer and have frequently posted heartwarming pictures of each other on their social media pages.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have been coming to my partner\u2019s home multiple days over the last few weeks, at all hours,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cAnd that vandalism was to a building that\u2019s owned by a person of color.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cMy partner doesn\u2019t own that building, he\u2019s a renter. So, that vandalism \u2014 it\u2019s probably thousands of dollars to clean up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The protesters hit Martin\u2019s building, even as Johnson says he was campaigning to build support for additional funding cuts and reforms at NYPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at myself as someone who\u2019s been trying to achieve the demands that these people have been asking for,\u201d a clearly frustrated Johnson said. \u201cI know they don\u2019t think it\u2019s good enough, and they don\u2019t think it\u2019s far enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, he added, \u201cI have to balance what the members of the Council want, and the Mayor wouldn\u2019t move on some things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s not alone.<\/p>\n

Other lawmakers on his budget negotiating team said they have been targeted and harassed by hard-line protestors, who were demanding the NYPD see up to half of its $6 billion budget cut and police officers laid off.<\/p>\n

They comprise just a small fraction of the tens of thousands of New Yorkers who hit the streets in peaceful protests to voice their outrage over the captured-on-video death of George Floyd, who died in police custody after a cop in Minneapolis knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes in a death reminiscent of Eric Garner\u2019s on Staten Island in 2014.<\/p>\n

While those massive protests called for police reforms \u2014 like repealing secrecy laws that protected disciplinary records from release \u2014 and cuts to the NYPD\u2019s budget, they typically sought a far smaller amount: $1 billion.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
