Not the most fun place to end a holiday. But do you know what? Doing a tour in Dachau memorial site delivered all of this. There are many private companies doing tours in Dachau and some of them are \u201cfree\u201d (you are expected to tip, of course), but we opted to do the official one.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visiting_Dachau_Concentration_Camp_Memorial_Site\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visiting_Dachau_Concentration_Camp_Memorial_Site\"><\/span>Visiting Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you are planning on visiting Dachau Concentration Camp, note that more than a tourist attraction, this is a memorial site! Please act accordingly and pay respect to everyone who died and suffered there.<\/p>\n<p>Without the tour, visiting Dachau Concentration Camp is free. You only have to pay 3 Euros for parking, if you are using a car. Note that this is not a free tour but costs only <strong>3 Euros<\/strong>. You will probably end up tipping the private guide more than this.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, on the official tour, you will have an experienced German guide, while in the private\u00a0ones you can\u2019t be that sure. These are some of the things we discovered while visiting Dachau:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s neither the worst nor the\u00a0biggest concentration camp, it was the <strong>first (only 6 weeks after Hitler going to power)<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<li>Dachau was the model from where all the others were created. It was, in some sense, a <strong>school of violence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As per the Nazis, it wasn\u2019t a concentration camp, but an \u201cEducation Camp\u201d to the opposition.<\/li>\n<li>There were <strong>no executions<\/strong> in Dachau concentration camp, it was used to distribute prisoners to other camps.<\/li>\n<li>Nazis avoided having executions on German soil;<\/li>\n<li>It worked under the <strong>Kapo system<\/strong>, where the other prisoners did the \u201cdirty work\u201d to keep the order;<\/li>\n<li>How the <strong>internal hierarchy<\/strong> worked and the <strong>badges<\/strong> to identify the prisoners;<\/li>\n<li>There were<strong> Jews<\/strong> but they weren\u2019t the majority of the prisoners in Dachau. The site has such a dark, historical shadow that we could sense it in the air. What happened there can\u2019t be forgotten or erased.
