The show-within-a-show on the \u201990s sitcom Home Improvement<\/i><\/a> featured Tim Allen<\/a> as know-it-all handyman Tim Taylor and Richard Karn<\/a> (above left, with Allen) as his reserved cohost, Al Borland. Now the actors reteam, as themselves, to judge this fun, fast-paced 10-episode competition series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Three mechanically inclined contestants, working from their home shops, build everyday household items (tonight: a fire extinguisher). Two move on to construct a crazy new invention like a combo ice melter\/leaf blower and \u2014 surprise! \u2014 repair whatever monkey wrench the series\u2019 resident DIY expert, April Wilkerson, throws into their plans. The winner pockets $5,000. We nail down the details of Assembly Required<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Can we expect Tool Time<\/i> banter?<\/b><\/p>\n

Tim Allen:<\/b> We\u2019re pretty much like we were, but it\u2019s on steroids because we\u2019re unscript<\/a>ed. I get a little ADD, and Richard calms me down. He doesn\u2019t judge me. I\u2019m a smart-ass.<\/p>\n

Richard Karn:<\/b> You have a very funny way of commenting on lots of little things, Tim. That\u2019s your beauty. He\u2019s very traditional; I\u2019m a modernist. I enjoy sparring. <\/p>\n

You pop in virtually to check up on the contestants (mechanics, engineers, all-around tinkerers). Any surprises?<\/b><\/p>\n

Allen:<\/b> I love the problem-solver mindset, but some people were frickin\u2019 lunatics. One guy [in the premiere] built everything out of hand-hammered metal. A woman built a waterfall in her backyard.<\/p>\n

Karn:<\/b> An aerospace engineer had problems with timing. <\/p>\n

Allen:<\/b> You watched him come unglued, which is only pleasant if you\u2019re not him.<\/p>\n

Field testing the prototypes is your job. Does that get dangerous?<\/b><\/p>\n

Allen:<\/b> They\u2019ve done every safety protocol, but there were some scary moments \u2014 just because it startled us \u2014 with flames and electrical stuff. <\/p>\n

Karn:<\/b> Yeah, especially with a machine that moves and has cutting implements, you don\u2019t want to get too close to Tim. He wants to rev it up and see how fast it will go. [Laughs<\/i>]<\/p>\n
