Other clubs, like Noir in Chelsea, have turned into restaurants to survive.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-d9f5bc7d-a7e2-4242-b04e-e29f0822ca40\">Tao Group has permanently shuttered two of its five nightclubs: Vandal on the Bowery \u2014 a pre-COVID hot spot for celebs like Ariana Grande and the Jonas Brothers \u2014 and Avenue, once a popular watering hole for Lindsay Lohan and Justin Timberlake.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-396d2c26-5b98-48d0-94db-ed1873450904\">Tao Group tried to save Avenue, where international fraudster Jho Low once dropped $160,000 in a single night, by renegotiating the space\u2019s lease, a source with knowledge of the situation said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-4e6d9b30-850c-4a59-87f3-e8b0817ce20d\">But the landlord decided to up and sell the building for $9 million to the B&amp;R Tenth Avenue LLC, according to records. The new owners, one source said, plan to tear down the building to make way for a new office tower.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-1782e82c-e4c5-44bc-a9aa-c40da1634a6f\">Fellow club czar Richie Akiva told Side Dish that his West Village club Up &amp; Down, popular with stars like Rihanna and Tyson Beckford, is also closing. \u201cIt had become a big brand but after the pandemic, simplifying things is a better solution,\u201d Akiva said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-3dc1d4fb-72fd-4ada-8834-9af3310dcdc7\">The club king will reopen his legendary 1Oak in the city\u2019s Meatpacking district when the city permits, however. The infamous club is where <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/05\/03\/rihanna-gets-cozy-with-olympic-fencer\/\">Rihanna hosted an after party<\/a> following the Met gala in 2017 and where ex-New York Knicks player Chris Copeland was stabbed outside in 2015, leading to the arrest of two other NBA players who were later cleared of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-b97706bb-2042-4d01-826a-db1ffeb63c21\">It\u2019s not just the curfew that\u2019s killing the nightclub industry \u2014 most NYC nightclubs operate in large spaces with few windows and no kitchens, making it tough to pivot during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-48c9643d-d6dc-4b20-9d03-1d4116daf405\">Noir in Chelsea is among the few clubs that has been able to make the transition, thanks in part to the partial kitchen it had in place prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-ffd1dbc8-f359-4e9d-9a30-9bd8ae274e71\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t have a deep fryer or a hood, so we just got creative,\u201d said Phil Zelonky, Noir\u2019s owner.<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p id=\"block-6ba43128-7a31-4318-98ed-231fef4eb1e7\">Zelonky hired an executive chef and created a menu that focused on a raw bar and sushi, which \u201ctook the pressure off,\u201d he said. And Noir continues to cater to the club crowd with \u201cbottle parades\u201d offered by masked servers who pour $2,000 plus-sized bottles of Moet Chandon champagne \u2014 known as magnums \u2014 directly into seated people\u2019s mouths.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9d7733ea-d7de-46c0-a87d-3e346f3ee6f8\">\u201cWe had to reinvent ourselves,\u201d Zelonky said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-7b6ea692-74c1-4f89-9a99-4baf44f6036d\">Noir first reopened as a restaurant on Oct. 12 before shutting down again when indoor dining ended in December. It reopened on Feb. 13 with just \u201csix or seven main tables and a few high tops\u201d in the vast 5,600 square foot space \u2014 making it ideal for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> distancing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-e699c9c2-6a96-4a96-a56d-7fc280a0eeea\">\u201cWe are a place for people to let loose. People are still popping bottles, but at their tables. People enjoy the food and music and bottle service and have their own little party in a safe way at their table,\u201d Zelonky said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-fd613c67-81db-4680-9ff7-0a12711dcbbf\">It\u2019s going so well, so far, that Zelonky tells Side Dish Noir will continue to serve as a restaurant six days a week at the start of the evenings, before morphing back into its old self \u2014 an old school late night club \u2014 when the city and state permit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-7b5f062b-94bd-4f26-b530-9385153b421a\">Two of Tao\u2019s five nightclubs \u2014\u00a0Tao Downtown Nightclub and Lavo Nightclub \u2014\u00a0are closed, though their separate restaurants are open, while its Marquee club is sitting dormant just waiting for the pandemic to lift, sources said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-448c76a4-fdf4-4924-b61f-757b8c497fdf\">Eddie Dean, who owned the legendary club Pacha NY and now owns Schimanski in Williamsburg, said he considered pivoting but decided against it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-c4a45764-437d-4a99-ab96-1bfbf8540638\">\u201cWe weren\u2019t a restaurant, and we couldn\u2019t go from putting on shows to selling chicken wings on the sidewalk,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-a63e641a-d7bb-4c54-97c2-1fdc23e42975\">Dean will, however, reopen Schimanski as soon as he gets the green light from the city and state.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-4e820696-c5ac-4e90-b988-f4eff8bdc7aa\">Owners of closed clubs say they hope to reopen at a later date, but also acknowledge that it could be tough thanks to the rise of one-off parties in large warehouses in the outer boroughs promoted on social media \u2014 a trend that\u2019s expected to return in full force post-pandemic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-4e21fbe8-04c0-401f-9652-0cef735f203c\">\u201cNew York\u2019s nightclubs were already struggling.\u00a0For some clubs,\u00a0COVID was the kiss of death,\u201d said Noah Tepperberg, co-founder of The Tao Group. \u201cWe need a mayor who will stand up for nightlife. Without it, we will lose the city that never sleeps.
