He doesn\u2019t say it explicitly, but he\u2019s a firm believer in going with the flow. \u201cI\u2019m trying to put out a kind of energy that will allow me to gravitate towards people that want more and vice versa,\u201d he says. \u201cOne thing I always said to my friends \u2014 and they think I\u2019m crazy \u2014 but what I say is that your mind is powerful. A lot of people can\u2019t see the positive in a situation but in a way I had to have the will to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            When Headie and I first speak, it\u2019s early October 2020, and the r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er born Irving Adjei is gearing up for the release of <i>Edna<\/i>, his long-awaited debut album. We\u2019re sitting in a bar in Aldwych, rain pelletting the infinity windows relentlessly. Headie\u2019s facial expressions don\u2019t reveal much about the inner workings of his mind, belying the fact that he never thought this moment would come back when he started releasing mixtapes independently in 2014. Stoicism is key for Headie; throughout his career, he\u2019s tempered his expectations, meaning that his successes \u2014 of which there have been many \u2014 have never led him to rest on his laurels. \u201cI\u2019m working on myself, just trying to get better,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m trying to get my energy right because it\u2019s easy to get taken off track and distracted. With less than a month to go until <i>Edna<\/i>\u2019s release, Headie has been here before \u2014 anticipating, waiting to show the world what he\u2019s really capable of. Early in 2020, he released <i>GANG<\/i>, a tonally experimental collaboration with producer Fred again.. that alienated his core, drill-loving audience. \u201cI know it wasn\u2019t everyone\u2019s cup of tea but I like testing boundaries and you can\u2019t impress everyone,\u201d he says regarding the reception to <i>GANG<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>            Rather than continue in the footsteps of <i>GANG<\/i>, <i>Edna<\/i> is much more of a compromise between drill and more out-there sounds, befitting a debut album. \u201cThis time I really pushed myself. Music hasn\u2019t really been a challenge for me and the style that I do comes to me so easily,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I get in my element and I want to do a genre that I favour, I want to test myself,  with different beats and producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Across London, Headie\u2019s image can\u2019t be escaped; statues of him were erected to celebrate <i>Edna<\/i>\u2019s release. In New York,<i>Edna<\/i>\u2019s cover was splashed across Times Square. It was momentous for Headie to see his voice permeate borders \u2014 especially since he himself can\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to the US, having been arrested and sent to prison in 2019 after being found with a knife in his possession. It was a fall as fast as his ascent, but it didn\u2019t break Headie\u2019s faith. \u201cI didn\u2019t really feel too terrible about it, I know it\u2019s only a matter of time before I\u2019m able to [travel to the US.] I\u2019m really feeling more positive about everything than negative,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p>            He was released early in 2020, thrust back into civilian life amidst a global pandemic that has altered any previous sense of normalcy. In six months, the world had changed dramatically. Headie says it gave him the environment he needed to focus: \u201cMentally, I\u2019ve become more at peace with being alone, and it\u2019s allowed me to have more time to think and meditate.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-220366\" class=\"content_block paragraph video triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Headie One - Princess Cuts (Official Video) ft. Young T &amp; Bugsey\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Px5l4mQ0H4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('220366');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-220367\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Although his music has always connected with young people living in circumstances similar to those he grew up in, <i>Edna<\/i> is, more than ever, a record tied to Tottenham, and to Broadwater Farm Estate. \u201cThat\u2019s the mud that you come from \u2014 it made me who I am, both positive and negative,\u201d he tells me. \u201c<i>Edna<\/i> is a story that could only come from Tottenham because of all of the things that I\u2019ve seen and experienced that I poured into this.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            As ever, Headie\u2019s lyricism cuts through the production, stripping all of the noise away to express the simultaneous singularity and universality of being a young man from Broadwater Farm Estate with aspirations far grander. \u201cDon&#8217;t look down on me, that was hypocrisy \/ Come up from poverty, blame the economy \/ You know the hustlers are gettin&#8217; monopoly \/ Do I blame destiny or blame astrology? So many different philosophies \/ Before I learned to love properly,\u201d he raps on \u201cTeach Me\u201d. He wants to let go of the past now that he\u2019s been shown a life he can have. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cNot being able to do all of the things I want to due to past mistakes is very limiting, but I have my own timing. Coming from where we come from \u2014 you\u2019ve got to have a lot of tools and help, but people don\u2019t really see the way out,\u201d Headie says. \u201cI\u2019m starting to build those tools for myself because I want to help change and do as much as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Although he\u2019s left Tottenham, Broadwater Farm Estate will always be a part of Headie.  When most people hear of the estate, they think of the 1985 riots or Mark Duggan, who was killed by police in 2011. In Psalm 35, which also happens to be the title of the second track on <i>Edna<\/i>, David is fierce in rallying of his faith but at the same time deeply earnest and yearning: \u201cContend, Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid. Brandish spear and javelin, against those who pursue me. Say to me, \u2018I am your salvation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Headie has a similar ferocity in his conviction. He\u2019s out for what\u2019s his, and, given the systemic and institutional barriers he\u2019s had to overcome, a drive for revenge is understandable: \u201cThat\u2019s the driving force, that\u2019s the main thing that\u2019s pushing me to do well,\u201d he tells me. \u201cIt\u2019s this feeling inside of almost like revenge because of how bad it was before, and that\u2019s been key.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            That fierce faith in both oneself and a higher power, combined with the way in which Headie delivers testimony through sermon in his own writing, has given him a language not only to contextualise his experiences but to realise his dreams, too. \u201cYo, somebody call God for me, tell him this is daylight robbery \/ Somebody tell the people that want an apology for all of their broken promises \/ Promises they made but, true, they didn&#8217;t owe it me \/ They said if I get lost, they&#8217;ll come for me, and comfort me,\u201d he spits on \u201cTeach Me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>            Back when we first spoke in that Aldwych bar, Headie was eager to find some semblance of normalcy in his life \u2014 a fair enough goal, given the chaos that has been part and parcel with his career since international stardom became part of the equation. Six months on from <i>Edna<\/i>\u2019s release, though, when I catch up with Headie again, normalcy seems the least of his concern. \u201cI\u2019m not very proud but I\u2019m happy,\u201d he explains, \u201cI want to do more and keep working, I don\u2019t want all of this to come to a halt just yet.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            For someone like Headie, it\u2019s audacious to dream. A lot of people without a stake in his life and future have made it that way.
