Pandemic journal: Biden\u2019s Vaccine Inertia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Evidence suggests \u201cvaccines really do work and that normal life is just a few hundred million shots away. How about a bit of urgency in \u00adadministering them?\u201d urges Oliver Wiseman at Spectator USA<\/a>. \u201cMaddeningly, the Biden administration and the public-health establishment\u201d have no \u201ccan-do spirit\u201d or even a plan for doubling vaccinations when app<\/a>roval of the Johnson & Johnson shot means we will have \u201c3 million doses a day.\u201d Team Biden only shows urgency about its $1.9 trillion \u00adrelief bill, leading it \u201cto downplay the light at the end of the tunnel\u201d that vaccines provide. Never mind that \u201cramping up vaccination speeds to bring the pandemic to a speedier end\u201d is \u201ca better way to alleviate\u201d economic suffering. Then there is the \u201cfocus on \u2018equity\u2019 that prioritizes factors other than speed\u201d and Biden\u2019s \u201cplodding logic\u201d that it\u2019s better to \u201cunderpromise than underdeliver.\u201d The \u201cinertia\u201d is irresponsible.<\/p>\n

From the left: Political Censors on the March<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment \u2018requests\u2019 of speech reduction, made to companies subject to federal regulation,\u201d Matt Taibbi notes at TK News<\/a>, \u201cmake the content-moderation decisions of private firms a serious First Amendment issue.\u201d Coming hearings aimed at pressing cable providers to drop Fox News<\/a> trace the path of 2017 hearings aimed at Google and Facebook<\/a> that \u201caccelerated the \u2018content-moderation\u2019 movement that now sees those same platforms regularly act as de facto political censors.\u201d Then, the threats included \u201cmaking the tech giants more susceptible to tort claims, as well as beefing up [Federal Trade Commission] authority\u201d over them. Meanwhile, the silencing of Parler, The Post\u2019s pre-election Hunter Biden scoops, independent-news livestreaming and UK and US Socialist Worker Party accounts all \u201cshare the same theme: small, unelected groups of private executives making sweeping decisions about speech, cheered on by Democratic Party politicians.\u201d This \u201cposes a much more serious problem for society than even Fox News at its worst.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gov\u2019t watchdog: A Reckoning for Public Unions<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to rethink the role of public-employee unions,\u201d argues Philip K. Howard at USA Today<\/a>. Their \u201cintransigence has contributed to two of the most socially destructive events in the COVID-19 era\u201d: closed schools and cops, like George Floyd\u2019s killer, who are near-impossible to fire. \u00ad\u201cRebuilding the economy\u201d post-pandemic will be harder if governments must \u201cabide by featherbedding and other artificial union mandates.\u201d These unions don\u2019t serve \u201cthe public\u2019s best interests\u201d \u2014 especially when, as labor leader Victor Gotbaum pointed out, their members can elect their own bosses. \u201cThe abuses of rogue police, teachers who won\u2019t teach and other indefensible public-union controls cry out\u201d for redress.<\/p>\n

From the right: This Bully Harasses Nuns<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden\u2019s pick for health secretary, California Attorney General<\/a> Xavier Becerra, is proud of his harassment of the Little Sisters of the Poor, opting to keep suing them even after the \u00adSupreme Court affirmed their right not to provide abortion health-insurance coverage. As Rich Lowry thunders at National Review<\/a>, he \u201cchose to pursue this litigation even though it is completely meritless; even though it would, if successful, punish nuns who simply want to carry out their calling to care for the indigent elderly.\u201d Becerra\u2019s \u201cact of performative illiberalism .\u2009.\u2009. should be rejected by all people of good will who want to live in a society where nuns \u2014 living out their faith \u2014 can give succor to the vulnerable without the federal government harassing them to violate their deeply held beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: The Gross War for Closed Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n

At a rally in Rockville, Md., to protest the county\u2019s school reopening plan, \u201cmany teachers went overboard in stating the dangers of teaching,\u201d reports the Washington Examiner\u2019s Timothy P. Carney<\/a>. One \u00adargued, \u201cThere\u2019s not going to be a great benefit to being in the classroom,\u201d since safety regulations would restrict children. Another held a \u201cWe Are NOT Expendable\u201d sign, likening in-person teaching to \u201cThe Hunger Game<\/a>s.\u201d The \u201cimplicit theme was that opening schools to \u00adin-person teaching amid 3 percent and falling positivity, mask mandates and universal testing of students and staff was likely to lead to teacher deaths.\u201d <\/p>\n
