\n A descendant of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee says it\u2019s a \u201cno brainer\u201d to remove Confederate symbols \u2014 even ones that honor his ancestor.<\/p>\n

Rev. Robert Lee IV, who is the fourth great-nephew of the general<\/a>, said that he grew up with the Confederate flag in his bedroom, but now believes the symbol has come to represent \u201cwhite supremacy and racism,\u201d ABC News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cI celebrated the fact that I was related to the man who was the standard-bearer for that flag,\u201d he said. \u201cBut as I\u2019ve grown, I\u2019ve learned that there is an importance to address what\u2019s going on now and to see it for what it is \u2014 white supremacy and racism have been the basis for the celebration of that flag for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that the Confederate monuments and emblems should be removed from public spaces as a matter of \u201cjustice\u201d in the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a no brainer. This is an issue of justice and of peace,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201c[If] we want peace in our time and the ability to [have] equality \u2026 we must do that by addressing the monuments not only in stone and in bronze, but elsewhere as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments come as Confederate symbols have become a flashpoint for groups who say they are demonstrating against racial injustice and police brutality.<\/p>\n

Several Confederate statues have been taken down \u2014 and plans were announced to topple one of Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves also ordered the removal of the Confederate battle emblem from the state\u2019s flag.<\/p>\n

Robert Lee IV said that he wanted to address the debate over symbols of the Confederacy \u201cnot only for my namesake\u2019s sake but also [because of] the reality that this is about more than just me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that his family history has \u201cmeant a lot\u201d to him, but \u201cthere\u2019s no distinction between fighting for your home state, which was ultimately for the state\u2019s right to enslave people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if he was fighting for his home state of Virginia, he was fighting for the continued enslavement of black people,\u201d he said. \u201cThat to me is just not something that we can have in our city squares, that\u2019s not something we can have in our schools, that\u2019s not something we can celebrate.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
