Facebook has apologized to Rita Rich-Mulcahy, the 81-year-old knitter who was nearly banned from the site for promoting \u201cwhite pigs.\u201d<\/p>\n

It all started when Rich-Mulcahy, of Adelaide, Australia, began knitting stuffed animals to pass the time and distract the grieving widow from the death of her husband in 2020. She also set up a Facebook page<\/a> through which to share her swine-inspired crafts. <\/p>\n

Recently, the self-proclaimed \u201cporcophile\u201d was flagged for \u201chate speech\u201d by the social media company \u2014 for captioning \u201cwhite pigs\u201d under images of her knitted piglets. <\/p>\n

The guiltless woman called it a \u201cfrightening\u201d experience for someone without so much as \u201can overdue library book,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cFacebook obviously used a bot to trawl,\u201d said Rich-Mulcahy, according to Shropshrie Star<\/a>. \u201cI had made two comments, totally innocent, which the bot saw as hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone on the knit site and my page knows I am a porcophile,\u201d said the native Briton, who has \u201cloved\u201d pigs since growing up next to a farm in Shropshire village. \u201cI always drew pigs when a little child.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first occurred on Feb. 1, the woman claimed, after a friend commented \u201cwhite rabbits, white rabbits\u201d beneath an image of the woolen trotters \u2014 in reference to a superstition that says good fortune comes to those who spot white rabbits at the beginning of the month. <\/p>\n

Rich-Mulcahy corrected her friend: \u201cNo, white pigs, white pigs!\u201d she wrote. In a separate incident this month, another post was removed for the caption \u201chi-viz piggy,\u201d as in \u201chigh visibility\u201d \u2014 a term usually used to describe neon and reflective safety gear. <\/p>\n

With no avenue for app<\/a>eal, the woman feared she could be banned permanently from the site for another unwitting slip-up. \u201cI would lose my great connection with my Shropshire friends,\u201d she lamented. <\/p>\n

But before that could happen, someone with the platform\u2019s community standards team became privy to the mishap. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur systems made a mistake here and the comments have now been reinstated,\u201d Facebook told Rich-Mulcahy. \u201cWe do sometimes make mistakes when reviewing content, which is why we give people the opportunity to appeal against our decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the drama quelled, the former language and arts teacher is delighted to continue her goal \u201cof knitting 100 small pigs\u201d and giving them punny names, such as Pigcasso, Hamlet and, naturally, Francis Bacon \u2014 a project she calls \u201cWittyknits.\u201d Money raised from sales of the dolls will go to The Smith Family charity, which supports disadvantaged Australian children through education.<\/p>\n

To Facebook, Rich-Mulcahy said, \u201cYou have made an old lady very happy today. It may seem a small thing to most people, but to someone who had never even had an overdue library book, being charged with using hate speech was frightening.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
