President Biden\u2019s nominee for assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services refused to respond after being grilled by Sen. Paul at her Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday regarding her stance on child gender transitioning.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican culture is now normalizing the idea that minors can be given hormones to prevent their biological development of their secondary sexual characteristics,\u201d Paul of Kentucky said at the hearing<\/a> for Dr. Rachel Levin, a transgender woman.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u200bMost genital mutilation is not typically performed by force. But as \u200bWHO\u00a0notes by social<\/a> convention, social norm\u200b, t\u200bhe social pressure to conform to do what others do and have been doing\u200b,\u200b as well as the need to be accepted socially the fear of being rejected by the community\u200b,\u201d Paul said. \u200b<\/p>\n

Winding up, he began his question to Levine.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Levine you have supported both allowing minors to be given hormone blockers, to prevent them from going through puberty, as well as surgical destruction of a minor\u2019s genitalia. Like surgical mutilation, hormonal interruption of puberty can permanently alter and prevent secondary sexual characteristics,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Paul then asked Levine: \u00a0\u201cDo you believe that minors are capable of making such a life-changing decision as changing one\u2019s sex?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bLevine, the first transgender person to be nominated for a Cabinet-level position, dodged the question, responding by saying transgender medicine is a \u201cvery complex and nuanced field\u201d and adding that she would be happ<\/a>y to discuss the \u201cparticulars\u201d if confirmed.<\/p>\n

Paul pressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill you make a more firm decision on whether minors should be involved with these decisions?\u201d\u200b he said.<\/p>\n

Levine, the Pennsylvania Secretary of Health, once again refused to answer, saying she would be \u201cpleased\u201d to talk to him about it further.<\/p>\n

Sen. Patty Murray, the chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, told Paul that his line of questioning was\u00a0inappropriate and wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is really critical to me that our nominees be treated with respect and that our questions focus on their qualifications rather than ideological and harmful misrepresentations\u200b\u00a0like those we heard from Sen. Paul earlier and I will focus on that as chair of this committee\u200b\u200b,\u201d Murray (D-WA) said\u200b.\u200b\n <\/p><\/div>\n
