\n Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced he won\u2019t roll back the state\u2019s reopening despite a recent spike in coronavirus cases, arguing that allowing people to go to work is \u201cnot what\u2019s driving\u201d the spread of the illness, according to a report.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going back, closing things,\u201d DeSantis told reporters Tuesday, according to Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that that really is what\u2019s driving it, people going to a business is not what\u2019s driving it. I think when you see the younger folks, I think a lot of it is more just social<\/a> interactions, so that\u2019s natural. Obviously, you had a lot of different activities going on in different parts of the state. \u2026 So that\u2019s just the reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis stopped short of ordering Sunshine State residents to stay home, instead urging younger people to \u201cprotect the vulnerable\u201d by social distancing and steering clear of the elderly people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re open, we know who we need to protect, most of the folks in those younger demographics, although we want them to be mindful of what\u2019s going on, are just simply much much less at risk than the folks who are in those older age groups,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, DeSantis blamed young people for the recent rise in infections, saying the demographic is difficult to \u201ccontrol.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at that 25 to 34 age group, that is now by far the leading age group for positive tests,\u201d Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a press conference. \u201cThey\u2019re going to do what they\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

His announcement came after leaders of other states with rising case numbers who temporarily paused reopenings \u2014 including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who last week ordered all bars closed, and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who issued a new shutdown order.<\/p>\n

Officials in hard-hit New York and New Jersey have also debated slowing reopenings, with New Jersey pausing plans for indoor dining Monday.<\/p>\n

Florida has reported 152,434 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday afternoon and at least 3,505 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
