Hasta la vista, live-action\u00a0\u2013<\/em>\u00a0here comes a\u00a0Terminator<\/em><\/strong> anime series! The\u00a0Terminator<\/em> film franchise has been met with diminishing returns for years now, and Skydance \u2013 the production company responsible for the series \u2013 has taken note. Rather than plow ahead with even more movies no one seems to want, Skydance is instead teaming up with Netflix for a\u00a0Terminator<\/em> anime series.\u00a0Mattson Tomlin<\/strong>, who penned the upcoming\u00a0The Batman<\/em>, will serve as showrunner.<\/p>\n

Netflix has been steadily building up a stable of anime content adapted from movies. They have\u00a0Godzilla<\/em> animes, an upcoming\u00a0Pacific Rim<\/em> anime, and even a\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/em> anime. Now, a\u00a0Terminator<\/em> anime series is joining the ranks. The series will be produced by Netflix and Skydance in partnership with Production I.G., which was responsible for\u00a0Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045<\/em> and\u00a0B: The Beginning<\/em>.
\nMattson Tomlin, who co-wrote the upcoming\u00a0The Batman<\/em>, and also wrote Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Project Power<\/em>, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. He said in a statement: \u201cAnyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I\u2019m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to app<\/a>roach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tomlin sneakily teased the project earlier this month on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His response was \u2018Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?\u2019 At that instant, I was confident we should get onboard. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Terminator<\/em> began its life as James Cameron\u2019s 1984 sci-fi thriller featuring\u00a0Arnold Schwarzenegger as a time-travel<\/a>ing killer cyborg. The first film is basically a slasher pic dressed-up as a sci-fi movie, and it rules.\u00a0Terminator<\/em> was followed by the even-more successful\u00a0Terminator 2: Judgement Day <\/em>in 1991, which was also directed by James Cameron and turned Schwarzenegger\u2019s killer robot into a good guy. And honestly, the series should\u2019ve ended there. But Hollywood just can\u2019t leave well-enough alone. Which meant in 2003 we got\u00a0Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines<\/em>. All things considered, it\u2019s not such a bad film \u2013 but it\u2019s a big step down from the previous films.<\/p>\n

After that came\u00a0Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles<\/em> in 2008, which had a committed fandom \u2013 but not one big enough to save the show from being canceled. But a TV series being canceled wasn\u2019t enough to dissuade more movies, and we were subjected to absolute junk like\u00a0Terminator Salvation<\/em> in 2009 and\u00a0Terminator Genisys in 2015. In 2019 came\u00a0Terminator: Dark Fate<\/em>, which was actually much better than expected. Despite this, the film failed at the box office, and probably killed off the film franchise for at least a few years. Knowing how these things work, someone will probably try to revive the film series at some point. For now, though, there\u2019s this new anime series to look out for.<\/p>\n
