Facebook is weighing whether to add facial recognition technology<\/a> to the smart glasses it\u2019s developing, one top executive says.<\/p>\n

The tech titan plans to have a public discussion about the feature\u2019s \u201cpros and cons\u201d in light of the ethical concerns it raises, according to Andrew Bosworth, the head of the company\u2019s virtual and augmented reality division.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really a debate we need to have with the public,\u201d Bosworth said during a Thursday Q&A on his Instagram page<\/a>. \u201cIf people don\u2019t want this technology, we don\u2019t have to supply it. The product\u2019s going to be fine either way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bosworth spoke up publicly after BuzzFeed News reported<\/a> that Facebook was examining whether it could legally build facial recognition features into the high-tech glasses it\u2019s planning to roll out later this year.<\/p>\n

During a company meeting on Thursday, one Facebook employee asked whether people could \u201cmark their faces as unsearchable\u201d when smart glasses become widely used given fears about the technology leading to \u201creal-world harm,\u201d according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

In addition to those concerns, current state laws may prevent Facebook from allowing people who use its glasses to look up others based on images of their faces, Bosworth reportedly said in the meeting.<\/p>\n

He noted on Twitter that facial recognition is a \u201chugely controversial topic and for good reason,\u201d but said the technology has some good practical uses \u201cif it could be done in a way the public and regulators were comfortable with.\u201d<\/p>\n

For instance, he said, it could help people who have prosopagnosia, a neurological condition that prevents them from recognizing others\u2019 faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore general<\/a> is the party use case where you see someone you recognize but can\u2019t place their name,\u201d Bosworth tweeted<\/a>. \u201cIs it a huge deal? Of course not. But might be nice if you could have your memory jogged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Facebook is reportedly developing its smart glasses to rival similar wearable gadgets made by Snapchat and Amazon. They\u2019re being built in partnership with the Ray-Ban specs brand and its parent company, Luxottica.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
