Call him the brownstone baritone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes there\u2019s a drone [of street noise] as soon as I\u2019m finishing my softest number,\u201d said Peter Clark, 56, who hosts a weekly concert from a stoop on Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights. \u201cAnd don\u2019t get me started on the Fresh Direct trucks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the hum of garbage trucks, car horns and the occasional drill, Clark puts on one of the most unique live shows in town. The opera singer and musical theater performer first went out to sing in his building\u2019s garden on May 1, the same night he was set to make his debut at the Tri Cities Opera in a production of \u201cA Little Night Music,\u201d postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to jump into the pity party,\u201d said Clark, whose neighbor encouraged him to join the 7 p.m. cheer to celebrate the city\u2019s health care workers. \u201cI brought down my speaker and started singing a song from \u2018Carmen.\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since then, Clark, who has lived on Hicks Street for 24 years and teaches music at St. Ann\u2019s School, has performed 154 alfresco concerts. Before the pandemic, he enjoyed onstage roles<\/a> including Henry Higgins in \u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d (Ashlawn Opera) and Sweeney Todd at the St. Petersburg Opera. Lately, he has a returning audience of 25 or so locals, mostly seniors who enjoy resonant renditions of arias and Broadway standards.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At first, Clark did 100 shows in a row, then took a break in early August. In the fall, he started up again, singing to the street on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings until he was chased down the block by annoyed neighbors. \u201cPeople in my building were getting over it,\u201d said Clark, who hypothesized that members of the co-op felt awkward leaving the building mid-show. \u201cSo we just went up the block to Rita\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rita Schwartz, 83, a longtime Hicks Street resident and classically trained musician, was happ<\/a>y to host the show on the steps of her brownstone. \u201cThe acoustics are better at my house, anyway,\u201d said Schwartz, who gives out Hershey\u2019s Kisses to audience members. \u201cWe\u2019re all connected because he\u2019s brought us all together,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave up pursuing musical theatre years ago,\u201d said Sarah Orlando, 49, a fellow resident who moved from Bellevue, Wash., to Brooklyn Heights about 15 years ago with dreams of being on Broadway. One evening last December \u2014 it was a Wednesday, as Clark only performs one night a week during the winter \u2014 she walked by his concert, calling the run-in \u201cserendipity.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the show, Orlando struck up a conversation and offered herself up for a duet. \u201cWe started talking about Sondheim,\u201d said Orlando. The duo began rehearsing the song \u201cBarcelona\u201d from the musical \u201cCompany\u201d that night, and performed it in full on the stoop a few weeks later.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since then, the redheaded church choir conductor has performed renditions of \u201cBroadway Baby,\u201d \u201cAdelaide\u2019s Lament\u201d from \u201cGuys and Dolls\u201d and \u201cSend in the Clowns\u201d from \u201cA Little Night Music\u201d in the four shows she\u2019s been a part of. \u201cI\u2019m more confident in my upper register than I\u2019ve been in years,\u201d added Orlando, who works as a corporate communications copywriter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even Clark\u2019s downstairs neighbor, Patricia Roberts, who called working from home beneath an active opera singer an \u201cinteresting experience,\u201d catches the weekly sets, which she said also bring her \u201cjoy.\u201d \u201cWhen you think of people working remotely, you think of office workers,\u201d said Roberts, a financial adviser.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people have barking dogs in the backgrounds of their Zoom calls,\u201d she said. \u201cI have the Metropolitan Opera.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
