channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.54%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       has joined a growing list of retailers boosting employees\u2019 wages to $15 an hour, but unlike rivals such as Target<br \/>\n        TGT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207799045\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.89%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.17%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Costco<br \/>\n        COST,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201191698\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.87%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       all of which now offer base pay of $15 an hour for all employees, the nation\u2019s largest private employer will keep its starting wages at $11 an hour.<\/p>\n<p> The pay raise at Walmart means that some 730,000 hourly workers will receive at least $15 an hour once the change goes into effect, Doug McMillon, Walmart\u2019s CEO said this month. That amounts to half of the company\u2019s hourly employee workforce,. but that means the same number of people will not receive the $15 an hour wage im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cI\u2019ve been working at Walmart for 11 years and only make $11.85, and most of us cashiers along with hundreds of thousands of others are once again left out of the raises Walmart is giving,\u201d said Mendy Hughes, a Walmart cashier, in a statement released after Walmart announced the pay raise. Hughes is a leader with United for Respect, which describes itself as a national nonprofit that is not a labor union. The group <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/united4respect.org\/victories\/\" class=\"icon none\">says it successfully campaigned<\/a> for Walmart to raise its starting wage to $11 an hour in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a cashier in the COVID-19 pandemic is among the most dangerous jobs there is,\u201d she added. \u201cWhy is it so hard for the richest family in America to just do what they should have done years ago and raise base pay for all Walmart associates to $15\/hour?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 730,000 Walmart hourly workers who will continue to make less than $15 an hour are hardly alone.<\/p>\n<p>At chains including Home Depot<br \/>\n        HD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208081807\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.21%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Dollar Tree<br \/>\n        DLTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203712248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.69%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Chipotle<br \/>\n        CMG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200781108\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.22%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Burger King<br \/>\n        QSR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202094900\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.54%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Kroger<br \/>\n        KR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206215053\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.62%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       McDonald\u2019s<br \/>\n        MCD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203508018\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.68%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       and Chick-fil-A, cashiers all earn less than $12 an hour, according to Glassdoor, a site that collects anonymous salary information from current and former employees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see: <\/strong><strong>What minimum-wage increases did to McDonald\u2019s restaurants \u2014 and their employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Chipotle, we pay our hourly workers above federal minimums and in some jurisdictions employees are already paid $15 an hour,\u201d said Laurie Schalow, chief corporate affairs officer at Chipotle.<\/p>\n<p>Among these chains, cashiers at Burger King and Dollar Tree earn the lowest, with average hourly wages of $9.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s, Chick-fil-A and Burger King have many franchise locations across the country where the franchise owners set employees\u2019 wages, rather than the companies themselves.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Dollar Tree, Burger King and Kroger did not respond to MarketWatch\u2019s request for a comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Labor Statistics <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/reports\/minimum-wage\/2019\/home.htm#:~:text=Among%20those%20paid%20by%20the,of%20all%20hourly%20paid%20workers.\" class=\"icon none\">estimated <\/a>that nearly 400,000 hourly workers in the U.S. earned exactly the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour in 2019. Another 1.2 million workers earned below the minimum wage in that year, not taking into account tips, commissions and overtime pay, the BLS reported.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden and Democratic lawmakers are pushing to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour and eliminate the tipped minimum wage by June 2025.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, some 17 million workers would see their wages boosted, according to a report published earlier this month by the Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan federal agency.<\/p>\n<p>The downside, however, is that 1.4 million workers could become unemployed as a result, according to the CBO\u2019s average estimate.
