Here\u2019s a Hollywood \u201cwhat if\u201d for you: What if Ryan Coogler<\/strong> had directed the\u00a0Coming to America<\/em><\/strong> sequel? It could have happ<\/a>ened, Eddie Murphy<\/strong> revealed in an interview ahead of the Amazon Prime Video release of the long-awaited\u00a0Coming 2 America<\/em><\/strong>. The\u00a0Black Panther<\/em> director \u2014 long before he helmed the Marvel phenomenon \u2014 had approached Murphy with a pitch for a\u00a0Coming to America<\/em> sequel. And while Coogler\u2019s pitch didn\u2019t interest Murphy, it did help get the ball rolling on what would eventually become\u00a0Coming 2 America<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In a recent\u00a0New York Times\u00a0interview\u00a0<\/a>alongside\u00a0Arsenio Hall, Murphy admitted that while fans had long demanded a sequel to his 1988 comedy classic\u00a0Coming to America<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cWe never thought about doing a sequel. The way the story ended was kind of like, \u2018And they lived happily ever after.’\u201d
\nAnd that would have been that.\u00a0Coming to America<\/em> would have remained the beloved comedy that it had always been, with no sequel on the horizon, with Murphy not giving it a second thought. But it wasn\u2019t until a rising Black director approached him with the idea for a sequel that Murphy realized that the film had reached iconic status over the years. Murphy recalled:<\/p>\n

\u201cThen Ryan Coogler, before he directed Black Panther, I meet with him and he says, I want to do a Coming to America sequel. He had an idea for Michael B. Jordan<\/strong> to play my son and he would be looking for a wife. I was like, then the movie would be about the son, it\u2019s not our characters, we already did that. It didn\u2019t come together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It is curious what Coogler\u2019s version would have looked like, though admittedly the idea of retreading the plot of\u00a0Coming to America<\/em> with his muse Michael B. Jordan would have probably felt a little tired. But considering what Coogler did with\u00a0Creed<\/em>, a continuation of the\u00a0Rocky<\/em> movies<\/a> featuring Jordan as Apollo Creed\u2019s son Adonis Johnson, the\u00a0Black Panther<\/em> director might have been able to breathe new, urgent life into\u00a0Coming to America<\/em>. But, fate would have it that Coogler would go on to helm\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>, and well, the rest is history.<\/p>\n

However, Coogler\u2019s pitch wasn\u2019t all for naught. The director\u2019s pitch to Murphy indirectly got the ball rolling on what would eventually become\u00a0Coming 2 America<\/em>, especially after Murphy saw the use of de-aging technology<\/a> on Arnold Schwarzenegger in the recent\u00a0Terminator\u00a0<\/em>movies. That sparked the idea of adding a scene into the sequel which would take place during the events of the original\u00a0Coming to America<\/em>, where Akeem and Semmi (Hall) have a wild night at the club. \u201cI go home with a girl and I\u2019m high \u2014 that was the piece we needed to start the flow,\u201d concluded Murphy.<\/p>\n

Craig Brewer directs\u00a0Coming 2 America<\/em>, which also stars\u00a0Jermaine Fowler<\/strong> as Murphy\u2019s son, and it hits Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021<\/strong>.
