\n It\u2019s a clash of the lefty titans.<\/p>\n

Firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mayor Bill de Blasio are engaged in another public spat \u2014 this time after Hizzoner called the lawmaker \u201cjust wrong\u201d when she accused him of fudging his $1 billion cut to the NYPD budget.<\/p>\n

During an interview on CNN\u2019s \u201cNew Day\u201d on Wednesday morning, de Blasio was asked about a statement from the Congressman where she said he was using \u201cbudget tricks\u201d and \u201cfunny math\u201d to make it look like he had defunded the city\u2019s police department.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, she\u2019s just wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe facts are, we took money from the NYPD, put it into youth programs. We are reducing the size of the NYPD but still in a way that can keep us safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez (D. Bronx) responded on Wednesday afternoon to Hizzoner\u2019s remarks with a tweet of a New York Times report which accused Big App<\/a>le officials of achieving the cuts with a \u201cbudgetary sleight of hand: Moving school safety officers under the Department of Education.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sweeping reduction to the NYPD\u2019s $6 billion budget, passed by City Hall on Tuesday evening, was made possible in part by transferring the department\u2019s school safety cops to other city agencies \u2014 saving $349.5\u202c million.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 1,163 cops were trimmed from the department, while overtime will be reduced by $352 million.<\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Social<\/a>ist, said the budget cuts, which she described as a \u201cdisingenuous illusion,\u201d didn\u2019t go far enough in a statement released Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a victory. The fight to defund policing continues,\u201d she said. \u201cDefunding police means defunding police. It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Education\u2019s budget so the exact same police remain in schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two progressives last traded blows when de Blasio praised the NYPD\u2019s response to violent protests in the city \u2014 AOC calling the comments \u201cunacceptable.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
