\n Gov. Cuomo went on a snark-filled rant about the NYPD at a Wednesday press conference \u2014 questioning whether the city\u2019s cutting $1 billion from the police budget would lead to any real change.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell they have a billion dollars less \u2014 what does that mean \u2013 does that mean I\u2019m less safe?\u201d he asked. \u201cDoes it mean I\u2019m more safe? Does it have any effect on police abuse?\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo stated again that he fully backs the George Floyd protesters the NYPD has been struggling, and sometimes clashing with,\u00a0 in the city for weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said great, what this nation has done standing up after Mr. Floyd\u2019s murder,\u201d Cuomo said of Floyd\u2019s death at the hands of Minneapolis cops.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo something \u2014 and you know where it starts?\u201d he asked. \u201cStart at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNYPD \u2014 change the NYPD,\u201d he said. \u201cChange it, but we took money from them. But what does that do? The problem is bigger than that \u2014 the problem is worse than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the 10 to 15 minute diatribe, Cuomo said that budgetary cuts alone won\u2019t solve the problems some community members have with police.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no respect and trust between the community and the police,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like a marriage \u2014 no respect, no trust, it doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what do you do?\u201d he asked. \u201cThe police department was not formed in the bible. It\u2019s not written in stone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then asked what the police department should be, playing the role of a protester.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m you, if I\u2019m a community activist, we haven\u2019t even started talking about the new plan for the police,\u201d Cuomo said. \u201c\u2018Well they cut a billion dollars,\u2019 so what! Does that mean they\u2019re not going to beat protesters? Does that mean they\u2019re not gonna drive them over with a car? What did that actually change? The protesters are saying: \u2018I want a new police department, I want all this stopped. Use of force policy, demilitarized, bias training, de-escalation \u2014 that\u2019s what we want addressed.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
