Now we know for sure who\u2019s gonna win the Oscar for Best Picture, right? The mist of obscurity has finally lifted, right? Place yer bets, right? Sorry, guys, it\u2019s not that clear-cut.<\/p>\n

Although the overpraised \u201cNomadland\u201d won the 2021 Golden Globe for best dramatic film Sunday night, history tells us that director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s film is not a sure thing for the Best Picture Oscar on April 25.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Look at the recent winners of the same illustrious prize: \u201c1917,\u201d \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d \u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,\u201d and \u201cThe Revenant.\u201d None went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, just two Golden Globe best comedy or musical victors have taken the top Oscar in the past decade: \u201cGreen Book\u201d and \u201cThe Artist.\u201d So, the odds aren\u2019t the greatest, even if the film starring Frances McDormand has long been seen as\u00a0a juggernaut since it premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Other voters are starting to get tired of it.<\/p>\n

While I\u2019ll\u00a0give this loony bunch of international reporters some credit for maturing in who they\u2019ve nominated the last few years \u2014 despite some moronic omissions \u2014 the 90-strong group still is not an accurate representation of the nearly 9,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s. The Oscars are voted on by real actors, directors, screenwriters and producers.<\/p>\n

Who can really\u00a0trust a drunk Italian journalist?<\/p>\n

While \u201cNomadland\u201d was a perfectly sensible choice for the top prize Sunday, the mysterious group still had its fair share of loco picks.<\/p>\n

One of the worst examples: Giving an award to Rosamund Pike for the dismal \u201cI Care a Lot\u201d \u2014 which will not get a single Oscar nod \u2014 instead of the revelatory Maria Bakalova from\u00a0\u201cBorat Subsequent Moviefilm.\u201d Nobody predicted that. As Borat would say, \u201cNot very nice<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another out-of-left-field choice was Andra Day, as Billie Holiday in \u201cThe United States vs. Billie Holiday,\u201d for best dramatic actress. She\u2019s terrific, but the newcomer\u00a0won\u2019t go on to win an Oscar over veterans such as Viola Davis (\u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom\u201c) or McDormand (\u201cNomadland\u201d).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jodie Foster won for \u201cThe Mauritanian,\u201d which few people have seen, over Amanda Seyfried for \u201cMank\u201d or Olivia Colman for \u201cThe Father.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the TV side, the Globes almost went full Brit: \u201cThe Crown\u201d won best dramatic TV series<\/a>, as well as acting awards for Emma Corrin, Josh O\u2019Connor and Gillian Anderson. <\/p>\n

For the small-screen comedies, \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d was still the darling, taking home statues for best comedy TV series and actress (Catherine O\u2019Hara). <\/p>\n

The best decision the Globes made, movie-wise, was awarding the wonderful late actor Chadwick Boseman for his work in Netflix\u2019s\u00a0adaptation of August Wilson\u2019s \u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom.\u201d It\u2019s an unforgettable performance. Tell your boss you\u2019re overstretched, and watch it today.<\/p>\n

The second best decision the Globes made all night was not awarding Kate Hudson with the best actress \u2013 comedy or musical award for her role in the offensive \u201cMusic.\u201d One very upset person took issue with my well-documented opinion on this issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, girl,\u201d an Instagram user commented on a photo of Hudson. \u201cWhat did you do to the New York Post writer Johnny Oleksinski?? Did you break his heart or something?? I hope you get the globe!!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Readers, I assure you: I would never be mad that Kate stood me up at Momofuku on our first date. I am a very serious journalist. I\u2019m not bitter at all.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
