There are a few givens in this industry, two of them being:\u00a0Netflix<\/strong> has a bottomless well of money to burn through, and Liam Neeson<\/strong> is not yet done making action movies<\/a>. Both are true in this latest acquisition news<\/a> story, which is that Netflix has set a record for domestic-only deals for the Liam Neeson action-thriller\u00a0The Ice Road<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports that Netflix has forked over $18 million for the Liam Neeson and Laurence Fisburne action thriller\u00a0The Ice Road<\/em>, setting a record for domestic-only deals out of the European Film Market, or EFM. The streaming giant won the U.S. rights to\u00a0The Ice Road<\/em> in a deal closed over the weekend as virtual EFM sales were underway, beating out multiple buyers for the film, per Deadline.
\nHere is the logline for\u00a0The Ice Road<\/em>:<\/p>\n

In\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Ice Road<\/em>, after a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, an\u00a0ice<\/span>\u00a0driver (Neeson<\/em>) leads an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the lives of trapp<\/a>ed miners despite thawing waters and a threat they never see coming.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The movie sounds like a grim action thriller along the lines of Neeson\u2019s 2011 survival film The Grey\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 a bleak drama which was one of the rare non-action films for the actor, who has been making genre films nonstop since the 2008 film\u00a0Taken<\/em>\u00a0inexplicably turned the former prestige actor of dramas like\u00a0Schindler\u2019s List<\/em>\u00a0into an action hero. But the actor has been getting up in age, and has claimed frequently over the past couple years that he\u2019s done with the genre \u2014 only to walk back his retirement to churn out a few more. But after the next few, he\u2019s done, Neeson recently claimed.<\/p>\n

Once\u00a0The Ice Road<\/em>\u00a0and an upcoming assassin movie called\u00a0Memory<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0are released, Neeson claims he\u2019s done with the action genre for good. At least that\u2019s what he said\u00a0earlier this year. \u201cOh, yeah. I think so. I\u2019m 68 and a half. There\u2019s a couple more I\u2019m going to do this year \u2013 hopefully, Covid allowing us \u2013 there\u2019s a couple in the pipeline and then I think that will probably be it,\u201d Neeson said.<\/p>\n

The Ice Road<\/em> is\u00a0\u00a0written and directed by\u00a0Die Hard With A Vengeance<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Armageddon<\/em>\u00a0scribe Jonathan Hensleigh<\/strong>. CODE Entertainment produced and financed alongside ShivHans Pictures. Envision Media<\/a> Arts also produced.
\nCAA Media finance brokered the deal with Netflix. The Solution handled foreign sales and has sold the movie well around the world.<\/p>\n
