Ben Ripley<\/strong>, the writer of the excellent sci-fi thriller\u00a0Source Code<\/em>, has another high-concept sci-fi pic headed our way, thanks to Netflix. The streaming service has scooped up Ripley\u2019s spec script\u00a0Parallel<\/em><\/strong>, which is described as a \u201cheist story that takes place across parallel universes.\u201d\u00a0Rideback, a production house run by Dan Lin<\/strong> and Jonathan Eirich<\/strong> that worked on the Netflix film\u00a0The Two Popes<\/em>, will produce\u00a0Parallel.<\/em><\/p>\n

THR<\/a> has the story on\u00a0Parallel<\/em>, revealing that the Ben Ripley spec script has been picked up by Netflix. Ripley\u2019s credits are a little all over the place. He wrote\u00a0Source Code<\/em>, a nifty little sci-fi thriller from 2011 in which Jake Gyllenhaal used time travel<\/a> (sort of) to help stop a terrorist attack. It\u2019s a clever flick that\u2019s only gotten better with age. That, too, was a spec script that a studio picked up. And it didn\u2019t exactly have an easy time getting to the screen.
\n\u201cYeah, it was agony,\u201d Ripley said<\/a>. \u201cAnd I wrote it on spec. I wasn\u2019t certain it would ever see the light of day. One thing that kept me going though was that I had a suspicion that if I got this right, it could really open a new level for my writing career. At that point, I\u2019d spent about four years doing studio rewrites on horror movies<\/a> that were never getting made. I knew that if I showed up with another spec script, I\u2019d have to show up with something very different that took chances. That motivated me to keep going until it seemed right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ripley also wrote a drama called\u00a0Boychoir<\/em>, two different direct-to-video\u00a0Species<\/em> sequels, and the needless 2017 remake of\u00a0Flatliners<\/em>. On top of that, the THR story says he\u2019s writing a sequel to\u00a0Air Force One<\/em>, which is news<\/a> that made me do a double-take. Yes, that\u2019s right, we\u2019re getting a follow-up to the movie where Harrison Ford plays the president and fights terrorists. Somehow.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Parallel<\/em>, the script is described as \u201ca sci-fi heist story that takes place across parallel universes\u201d that \u201cinvolves a man and woman who traffic in high-end crimes in parallel universes suddenly meeting, a development that threatens their boss. Determined to outrun their fates, they fight across these different realities to find one where they can both survive and be together.\u201d\u00a0That kind of sounds like the mostly-forgotten 2011 movie\u00a0The Adjustment Bureau<\/em>, with a little\u00a0Source Code<\/em> thrown in for good measure.<\/p>\n
