Data storage on your Mac is important\u2014it determines how many app<\/a>s, documents, photos, and videos your computer can hold locally. If you run into the upper limit, your Mac might not perform as well as you might hope. Here\u2019s how to check the size of your Mac\u2019s internal storage.<\/p>\n

First, click the \u201cApple\u201d logo in the upper-left corner of your screen and select \u201cAbout This Mac\u201d from the menu.<\/p>\n

In the window that appears, click the \u201cStorage\u201d button. (In some earlier versions of macOS, this button may appear as a tab.)<\/p>\n

When the \u201cStorage\u201d display loads, you\u2019ll see a list of your internal drives and each drive\u2019s capacity. In our example, this MacBook Pro includes just a single drive with \u201c500 GB of Flash Storage.\u201d<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also see how much free disk space you have available on each drive, listed just beneath each drive name.<\/p>\n

If you want more details on your internal storage, click the \u201cOverview\u201d button, then click \u201cSystem Report.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the \u201cSystem Information\u201d window, click \u201cStorage,\u201d in the sidebar, and you\u2019ll see detailed information on all of your drives. You\u2019ll see the size of your Mac\u2019s internal storage listed under \u201cCapacity.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this example, the drive\u2019s exact capacity is 494.38 GB, which is less than the \u201c500 GB of Internal Flash Storage\u201d we saw earlier. That\u2019s because \u201c500 GB\u201d is the unformulated drive size. Once formatted by macOS, the drive has 494.38 GB of space available for use.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re done, close the System Information window.<\/p>\n

If what you found in your search was underwhelming, it\u2019s possible to increase the size of internal storage on some MacBooks and desktop Macs by installing a new larger SSD or hard disk. Or if you\u2019re just tight on storage space, it\u2019s possible to free up space on your internal drive. Good luck!<\/p>\n
