Here\u2019s how you do this.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Change_the_Default_New_Folder_Name_in_the_Registry\"><\/span>How to Change the Default New Folder Name in the Registry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To change the default new folder name in Windows 10, you need to edit a value in the Windows Registry. Here\u2019s our standard warning for registry tweaks: Be careful when editing the registry, as you could cause problems with your computer. However, if you stick to our instructions, you won\u2019t have a problem. You may want to back up your registry before proceeding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Backup and Restore the Windows Registry<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can use pretty much any name you like as the new default folder name. However, you can\u2019t use any of the following characters in your folder name:<\/p>\n<pre> \/ ? : * \" &gt; &lt; | '<\/pre>\n<p>To begin, open the Run box by pressing the Windows+R keys at the same time. Type \u201cregedit\u201d in the Run box and hit \u201cEnter.\u201d (You can also open the Start menu, type \u201cregedit\u201d in the search box, and press \u201cEnter.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/open-registry-editor-1.png\" alt=\"Open the Windows Registry Editor\" width=\"595\" height=\"351\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When the Registry Editor opens, head to the following path by clicking on directories on the left of your screen. For example, if you create a new text file, it will use the new default name that you specified above for your folders.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent that, add \u201c%s\u201d after your new folder text in the string value. The \u201c%s\u201d will keep the original name of whatever item it is that you\u2019re creating while prefixing it with your chosen text.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/prevent-other-item-naming-1.png\" alt=\"Prevent changing other item names\" width=\"650\" height=\"332\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you add \u201cMy %s\u201d, Windows 10 will create a new folder with the name \u201cMy New folder.\u201d If you create a new text file, it will be named \u201cMy New Text Document,\u201d and so on.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_the_Current_Date_as_the_Default_Name_for_New_Folders\"><\/span>Use the Current Date as the Default Name for New Folders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you organize your folders by dates, you can use the current date as the default name for new folders in Windows 10. To use this, your current date settings must use hyphens as separators.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, open the \u201cStart\u201d menu, search for \u201cSettings,\u201d and click \u201cSettings.\u201d You can also press Windows+i to open the Settings app.<\/p>\n<p>Here, click the \u201cTime &amp; Language\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/time-language-settings-1.png\" alt=\"Access time and language settings\" width=\"650\" height=\"242\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Select \u201cRegion\u201d on the left sidebar and click \u201cChange data formats\u201d on the right pane.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/change-data-formats.png\" alt=\"Change data formats in Windows 10\" width=\"650\" height=\"402\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Click the dropdown menu for \u201cShort date\u201d and select the date format that uses hyphens. To do this, right-click the taskbar (the bar at the bottom of your screen) and select \u201cTask Manager.\u201d You can also press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.<\/p>\n<p>Find \u201cWindows Explorer\u201d in the list of Processes, click it, and click \u201cRestart\u201d in the bottom-right. You can right-click an entry and select \u201cDelete\u201d to delete the entry from the Windows Registry.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you followed the first method, just go back and delete the \u201cRenameNameTemplate\u201d value you created.
