“#California teacher makes anti-Asian gesture during Zoom class: video<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A California high school teacher is under fire for making a \u201cshocking\u201d anti-Asian gesture during a Zoom class last week.<\/p>\n

Nichole Burkett, a Spanish teacher and advisor for the class of 2022 at Sacramento\u2019s Grant Union High School, is shown on video<\/a> intentionally narrowing her eyes during an online class last week, according to local reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your eyes go up, you\u2019re Chinese,\u201d Burkett said, as she stretched her own eyes. \u201cIf they go down, they\u2019re Japanese. If they\u2019re just straight, you don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI should leave your class right now!\u201d someone can be heard saying after Burkett finished.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued to the Sacramento Bee<\/a>, Twin Rivers United School District spokesperson Zenobia Gerald called the video \u201cshocking\u201d and \u201cdisapp<\/a>ointing,\u201d adding that the district has opened a probe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe video \u2026 does not represent the values held by Twin Rivers and the community,\u201d Gerald added. \u201cAn investigation was immedia<\/a>tely launched when we were notified about the video. Please know that Twin Rivers is committed to providing all students with a safe and civil learning environment in which all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect. We do not tolerate any form of racism from any member of our school community.\u201d<\/p>\n

School principal Darris Hinson issued a similar statement to staff, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Burkett declined to comment to the paper, but a response from an email address associated with her said: \u201cI have been advised to not make any statements until my union representative gets back to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burkett\u2019s staff biography on the school website indicates that she is the club advisor for Lao Xang Noy, and KPOP.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI love teaching and supporting all students at Grant,\u201d she wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incident comes amid a recent wave of assaults on Asian victims in California and other parts of the country.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
