\n Maya Wiley, the former top counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio and the one-time head of the city\u2019s police oversight panel, is considering a run for mayor in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very real, it is serious. She\u2019s received a lot of calls and encouragement\u201d to run, a Democratic source close to Wiley told The Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Wiley left the mayor\u2019s office in June 2016 to lead the Civilian Complaint Review Board, which investigates complaints against the NYPD, and to become the senior vice president for social<\/a> justice at the New School.<\/p>\n

She stepped down from the CCRB about a year later, saying she wanted to focus her attention on her job at the New School, where she is also a professor of urban policy and management.<\/p>\n

Although the state\u2019s Democratic primary is next June, candidates would have to begin raising money soon, unless they\u2019re wealthy and will foot the bill themselves.<\/p>\n

And with Democrats representing about 70 percent of registered voters in the Big App<\/a>le, winning the primary is essential.<\/p>\n

De Blasio is term-limited against running again, but there could be a large field of candidates.<\/p>\n

Among those expected to run are Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, City Comptroller Scott Stringer and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.<\/p>\n

The entry of the civil rights attorney and legal contributor to MSNBC into the mayor\u2019s race could align with a cultural shift following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police department in May.<\/p>\n

Protests that have spread across the country rally around chants to defund the police amid calls for racial justice and equality.<\/p>\n

Wiley, as the head of de Blasio\u2019s School Diversity Advisory Group, recommended in February 2019 that the city should consider transferring school security from the NYPD to the Department of Education.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, she said that the city\u2019s plan to cut $1 billion in spending from the NYPD\u2019s budget didn\u2019t go far enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemand to cut $1B from #NYPD budget was clear. Today\u2019s deal isn\u2019t a cut. It\u2019s moving the deck chairs around,\u201d Wiley wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to stop tinkering and start transforming public safety. It requires school social workers, mental health svcs, housing= problem-solving, not policing human needs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
