In what app<\/a>ears to be a direct refute of\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em><\/strong> creator\u00a0J.K. Rowling<\/strong>\u2018s poisonous transphobia, the\u00a0upcoming\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em> video game\u00a0Hogwarts Legacy<\/em><\/strong> will allow players to customize their characters to be transgender. It\u2019s a feature that the development team has reportedly been pushing hard to implement in lieu of Rowling\u2019s distressing remarks, and which is planned to be a key part of the game when it launches in 2022.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg<\/a> reports that\u00a0a trans-inclusive character creator feature will be part of the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Avalanche Software game, allowing players to\u00a0\u201ccustomize their character\u2019s voice, body type and gender placement for the school dormitories.\u201d
\nPer Bloomberg, \u201cWhen players start up the game, they will be able to create a character that has a masculine or feminine voice no matter what their body looks like, according to people familiar with the game\u2019s development.\u201d Players will then get to select either \u201cwitch\u201d or \u201cwizard\u201d to determine which dorm they\u2019ll get placed in at Hogwarts and how they will be addressed by other characters in-game.<\/p>\n

This level of customization is not unusual in video games, but it is noteworthy in light of Rowling\u2019s blatant transphobia<\/a>, which has damaged the public goodwill toward the franchise and been denounced by\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em> film stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>, a series<\/a> long thought of as being a safe haven for inclusivity, was no longer. But the\u00a0Hogwarts Legacy<\/em> development team want to bring that inclusivity back to the franchise. Members of team who were \u201crattled\u201d by Rowling\u2019s comments reportedly pushed for character customization and even a transgender character to be added, Bloomberg reports. There is no news<\/a> yet on whether the latter will be added, but the character customization is part of the current plan, per Bloomberg reporter\u00a0Jason Schreier<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But this positive step towards trans-inclusivity should come with a grain of salt. Rowling may not be directly involved in the\u00a0project, which is solely overseen by Portkey Games, a new division created to oversee interactive\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0experiences, but she notably still earns royalties for projects under the\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em> brand.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Hogwarts Legacy<\/em>\u00a0finally does launch, supposedly in 2022, it will be available on a wide range of platforms including\u00a0PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n
