“#Nice Guy Rian Johnson Has Nice Things to Say About the \u2018Star Wars\u2019 Prequels<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

While I don\u2019t know Rian Johnson<\/strong> personally, I think I\u2019m safe in assuming he\u2019s a nice guy. He would have to be \u2013 after\u00a0The Last Jedi<\/em> came out, Johnson\u2019s Twitter<\/a> account was bombarded with angry people bemoaning how different his\u00a0Star Wars<\/em><\/strong> movie was. And rather than telling everyone to go pound sand \u2013 which is probably what I would\u2019ve done \u2013 Johnson has remained polite and even respectful about the entire thing (probably because he knows deep down that he made one of the best\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> movies<\/a> ever). Recently, Johnson kept the niceties flowing by showering some praise on the much-derided\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> prequels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently on Twitter, a prompt was making the rounds urging people to say something \u2013 anything! \u2013 nice about the prequels. Rian Johnson, director of\u00a0Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em>, weighed in, and made a pretty good case for why the prequels are important:<\/p>\n

\u201cLucas made a gorgeous 7 hour long movie for children about how entitlement and fear of loss turns good people into fascists, and did it while spearheading nearly every technical sea change in modern filmmaking of the past 30 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Like I said: nice guy. And this\u00a0is<\/em> a good defense of the prequels. I still think the plotting, dialogue, and, well\u2026almost everything else about those three films is a mess. But I do agree with Johnson that Lucas was going for something big and risky, and the world of franchise films could use more risks like that, especially these days.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been interesting to watch the sentiment about the\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> prequels evolve over the years. I distinctly remember how loathed the movies were not too long after the prequel trilogy concluded, but over time, I\u2019ve noticed a strong uptick in people defending the George Lucas<\/strong>-directed movies. I\u2019m assuming the change has to do with a younger generation having grown up with the films, and thus having a special place for them in their hearts (you know, kind of like how people love\u00a0Space Jam<\/em> even though it\u2019s awful).<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t begrudge anyone for liking the prequels \u2013 everyone is entitled to like whatever movie they like. That said, I still remain firm in my belief that they\u2019re pretty damn bad. The best of the bunch is probably\u00a0The Phantom Menace<\/em><\/strong>, and even that is barely watchable. Still, for all the faults of the prequels, I will concede that George Lucas did attempt to cram some big, important theme<\/a>s into the films, and that\u2019s commendable.<\/p>\n
