If you\u2019ve ever searched for a transparent image on Google, you\u2019ve probably run across \u201cfakes.\u201d You save an image only to realize the checkered background is solid. Thankfully, there\u2019s a simple little trick in Google Images to avoid this.<\/p>\n

For those unfamiliar with this phenomenon, allow me to explain. Images that have transparency often illustrate it by using a gray and white checkered pattern. The idea is that you can see which parts of the image will be transparent before you save it.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how it plays out: You search for an image, maybe a logo with a transparent background, and you see a result like this:<\/p>\n

It app<\/a>ears that the background behind the Microsoft logo will be transparent when you save the image, but here\u2019s what it actually looks like (black border added):<\/p>\n

The checkered pattern is<\/em> the background. There\u2019s no transparency. Here\u2019s how to prevent that from happening.<\/p>\n

Go to\u00a0Google Images<\/a>\u00a0in your desktop web browser (such as Chrome or Microsoft Edge) and search for something with transparency. Unfortunately, this doesn\u2019t work on the Google mobile site.<\/p>\n

Next, click \u201cTools\u201d underneath the search bar.<\/p>\n

A toolbar will expand with a few extra options. Select \u201cColor.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the drop-down menu, choose \u201cTransparent.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it. All of the results will now be images that contain at least partial transparency.<\/p>\n
