Call it equal opportunity laughter, but Louie Anderson did not app<\/a>ear in 1988\u2019s \u201cComing to America\u201d because stars Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall were dying to share the screen with him.<\/p>\n

When the two of them appeared on \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d<\/a> to promote the sequel, \u201cComing 2 America,\u201d they revealed the real reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Louie, but I think we were forced to put Louie in it,\u201d Hall, 65, told the host. \u201cWe were forced to put in a white person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy, 59, agreed: \u201c[The studio was] like, \u2018There has to be a white person in the movie.\u2019 I was like, \u2018What?\u2019 So who was the funniest white guy around? We knew Louie was cool, so that\u2019s how Louie got in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

In case there are any doubts to the veracity of this tale, Hall referred to proof. \u201cIt was official,\u201d Hall continued. \u201cI had a list. They gave me a list with three white guys. They said, \u2018Who would you rather work with?\u2019 I said Louie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever the case, Anderson, who scored an Emmy for his performance on the FX comedy \u201cBaskets,\u201d must have done something right: He made it into the sequel. He updates his role of Maurice, a goofball fast-food worker at the golden-arched McDowell\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Hall\u2019s list aside, Anderson has maintained that he did a little something to grease the wheels of casting. Back in the late 1980s, while dining at the Ivy \u2014 a Beverly Hills hot spot for celebs \u2014 Anderson spotted Murphy and his entourage. He told the waiter to put Murphy and company\u2019s tab on his credit card. But, as Anderson recounted to the \u201cSway in the Morning\u201d<\/a> satellite radio crew in 2017, he instructed the waiter, \u201cDon\u2019t tell him \u2018til after I leave. I\u2019m not doing it to be a big shot. I\u2019m doing it because I\u2019m from the Midwest and that\u2019s how we would do [it].\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning Anderson received a call from Murphy. He not only offered thanks for the gesture \u2013 \u201cNobody ever bought me anything,\u201d Murphy told Anderson \u2013 but also said that he wants to cast Anderson in \u201ca little movie called \u2018Coming to America.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Marveling at comedic karma, Anderson said, \u201cThat\u2019s life, isn\u2019t it? It was the best $660 I ever spent.\u201d<\/p>\n
