“#Journalists blast Chris Cuomo for refusing to cover brother’s scandals<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo is being slammed by fellow members of the media<\/a> for refusing to cover Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s growing list of scandals, following a number of softball interviews during the height of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

At the top of his Monday evening broadcast, the host of \u201cCuomo Prime Time\u201d told viewers that \u201cobviously I am aware of what\u2019s going on with my brother, and obviously I cannot cover it, because he is my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, of course CNN has to cover it,\u201d the host continued. \u201cThey\u00a0have covered it\u00a0extensively and they will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always cared very deeply about these issues and profoundly so,\u201d Cuomo, 50, added. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of news<\/a> going on that matters also, so let\u2019s get after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The awkward acknowledgment came\u00a0after a third woman came forward\u00a0to accuse the governor, 63, of inapp<\/a>ropriate sexual behavior.<\/p>\n

The younger Cuomo\u2019s comments Monday evening \u2014 as well as his coverage of his brother more broadly \u2014 came under considerable scrutiny from journalists and correspondents from across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is why it was a mistake to allow him to do those interviews with his brother,\u201d New York Magazine contributor Yashar Ali wrote on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cAnd don\u2019t come to me with \u2018we needed it! It made us happy!\u2019 If you\u2019re getting your comfort and joy from a Cuomo brothers interview you have bigger problems to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact CNN ever allowed Andrew Cuomo to appear on Chris Cuomo\u2019s show is incomprehensible to me,\u201d Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Susanne Craig, who writes for the New York Times, tweeted<\/a> of Cuomo\u2019s new journalistic practice. <\/p>\n

Craig\u2019s colleague, Times White House correspondent Annie Karni, echoed her confusion at CNN over allowing a primetime anchor to interview his lawmaker sibling in the midst of the worst health crisis in a century.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat makes sense,\u201d Karni tweeted<\/a> of the anchor no longer covering his brother. \u201cWhat never made sense to me was Chris Cuomo covering him when things were going well for Andrew Cuomo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Al-Jazeera English senior correspondent Alan Fisher slammed the CNN anchor for changing his stance on covering his brother once he started getting bad press.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo he can cover his brother when he thinks it\u2019s good news but not now. The whole shtick with his brother was wrong then and this is really apparent now,\u201d Fisher wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Derek Willis, who covers politics and elections for ProPublica, tweeted that<\/a> Cuomo\u2019s statement was \u201cridiculous,\u201d noting that such disclosures end up being necessary \u201cwhen you pretend that an obvious conflict doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben Terris, a political reporter with the Washington Post, joked on the social media platform<\/a> that \u201cEvery J-school student knows that ethically you are only allowed to interview your brother when the news about him is good. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s like, a day one lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calling it \u201cconfusing,\u201d Byron York, chief political correspondent at the Washington Examiner, asked on Twitter<\/a>: \u201cWhy is it that Chris Cuomo cannot cover his brother the governor now, when he could cover his brother the governor last year at a time when some in media were pretending the governor was doing a good job handling the pandemic?\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Cuomo\u2019s colleague, CNN commentator Mary Katherine Ham, questioned him directly<\/a> on the site, writing, \u201cWhy is this different from spring\/summer of last year?\u201d<\/p>\n

As of Tuesday morning, the younger Cuomo has not yet answered her question.<\/p>\n

The New York governor made\u00a0regular appearances<\/a> on\u00a0his younger brother\u2019s show at the height of the coronavirus pandemic last year. The two would joke around during the segments, including about Andrew\u2019s relationship status.<\/p>\n

CNN\u00a0recently\u00a0reinstated a ban\u00a0on Chris covering his sibling after an\u00a0exclusive Post report\u00a0found the governor\u2019s administration covered up thousands of nursing home COVID-19 deaths.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for CNN did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment on reaction to decisions around Cuomo\u2019s coverage of his brother.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
