“#Jonathan Tucker dishes on NBC sci-fi show ‘Debris’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Jonathan Tucker said his stint on HBO\u2019s \u201cWestworld\u201d ignited his interest in diving deeper into a new genre.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI like sci-fi, and I haven\u2019t really done it in a meaningful way,\u201d Tucker, 38, told The Post.<\/p>\n

That led him to his new NBC show \u201cDebris,\u201d (Mondays at 10 p.m.), a drama from \u201cFringe\u201d executive producer J.H. Wyman. The story is centered on two agents investigating an alien spacecraft that\u2019s landed on earth, scattering debris that causes strange occurrences \u2014 including levitating bodies \u2014 among people with which it comes into contact.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I was only able to kind of play in that world in \u2018Westworld,\u2019\u201d Tucker said, \u201cbut it was an exciting opportunity while I was doing that show realizing what all the possibilities are.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Contact\u2019 is one of my favorite films. I loved all the original \u2018Twilight Zones,\u2019 and I like \u2018Black Mirror.\u2019 Those have been informative to \u2018Debris,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I went back and watched \u2018The X-Files,\u2019 which really does hold up, and the dynamic between those two characters [Scully and Mulder] is very successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just like \u201cThe X-Files,\u201d the agents in \u201cDebris\u201d are an odd-couple pair with different sensibilities: there\u2019s M16\u2019s Finola Jones (Riann Steele), an idealist who thinks the debris\u2019 otherworldly qualities might be able to help humanity, and CIA agent Bryan Beneventi (Tucker), an ex-Marine vet who fears what the alien tech could do in the wrong hands.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that\u2019s fun for the audience of this show and fun for me and my co-star Riann is we\u2019re responding to things that are totally fantastic and otherworldly \u2014 but in a very grounded experience here on Earth,\u201d said Tucker.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was interested in the backstory for Bryan, who is a former Marine special forces out of Afghanistan, and bringing some of that trauma to the character \u2014 particularly where Bryan has to understand that empathy and vulnerability are assets for the team to succeed in this story.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the sci-fi genre might be new to him, a character with an intense backstory is familiar territory for Tucker. In addition to \u201cWestworld\u201d (he played military officer Major Craddock, one of the show\u2019s robot \u201chosts\u201d in its futuristic park) and movies<\/a> such as \u201cHostage,\u201d he\u2019s known for playing live-wire characters who bring an unpredictable energy to crime-dramas such as \u201cJustified,\u201d\u00a0\u201cCity on a Hill\u201d and \u201cKingdom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everybody is a lot less boring than they think, and everyone has a story to tell,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m excited about being on a network. I\u2019ve been doing all this cable work and it can be sometimes hard for folks to find and see \u2014 so the idea of getting to be on a larger platform was great.\u201d<\/p>\n

As \u201cDebris\u201d progresses this season, Tucker said it will balance its sci-fi concept with human questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is meaningful for us in the show is that the alien technology<\/a> \u2014 while exciting \u2014 is also a conduit for us to ask bigger questions about humanity and who we are on earth. I had the opportunity to speak to a NASA astronaut, and the things we were talking about were, \u2018What changes when you come home, what does the view through that new lens look like?\u2019 You go somewhere, see something, or become aware of something new and the biggest change is within your heart and how you experience the life you were living before that new information was presented.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re asking the questions of, \u2018If you know that there is intelligent life out there, how does that change your experience on earth?\u2019 Do you hold your kids differently, do you call your mom more, do you buy that expensive bottle of wine? <\/p>\n

\u201cThose are some of the issues that we\u2019re trying to shake out.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
