“#Soul and Wolfwalkers Lead the 2021 Annie Awards Nominations \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Every year, Annie Awards<\/strong> does what the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and all the other big awarding bodies cannot: properly celebrate the best of animation. And this year, the\u00a0ASIFA-Hollywood\u2019s annual animation awards did their job right, doling out the most nominations to two of the best movies<\/a> of the year: Pixar\u2019s singular\u00a0Soul<\/em><\/strong> and Cartoon Saloon\u2019s hand-drawn masterpiece\u00a0Wolfwalkers<\/em><\/strong>. But which one will deservedly walk away with the most prizes? We\u2019ll have to find out when the\u00a048th Annie Awards are streamed live on April 16, 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Soul<\/em> and\u00a0Wolfwalkers<\/em> both dominated the 2021 Annie Awards nominations, leading the pack with 10 nods each. They\u2019re both expected to win their respective\u00a0feature and best independent feature categories, but are nose-to-nose when it comes to\u00a0direction, FX, character\u00a0animation<\/a>, character design, production design, score, storyboarding, and writing. But each has one nomination for a category the other does not \u2014\u00a0Soul<\/em>\u00a0for editorial,\u00a0Wolfwalkers<\/em> for voice acting.
\nI\u2019m personally pulling for\u00a0Wolfwalkers<\/em>, Cartoon Saloon\u2019s breathtaking feat of hand-drawn animation which looks and feels like no other animated film today. It\u2019s naturally the underdog \u2014 Pixar has another seven nominations for\u00a0Onward<\/em>, and leads for studios overall \u2014 but it feels right that the exquisite\u00a0Wolfwalkers<\/em> should get acknowledged by the animation industry when it\u2019s becoming more likely that\u00a0Soul<\/em> will walk away with the mainstream awards like the Oscars.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, it\u2019s nice that anime<\/a> films like\u00a0On-Gaku: Our Sound<\/em> and\u00a0Ride Your Wave<\/em> are getting nods, with more Eastern independent features getting more notice outside of the domineering force that is Studio Ghibli (which sadly disapp<\/a>ointed with the still-nominated\u00a0Earwig and the Witch<\/em>). Also, shout-out to\u00a0Aardman\/Netflix\u2019s stop-motion\u00a0 A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon<\/em> for getting three nods despite being undeservedly overlooked last year.<\/p>\n
