“#NYPD launches new graffiti clean-up initiative<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Cops are asking Gothamites to pipe up about graffiti in their neighborhoods \u2014 and join New York\u2019s Finest to help clean it up, officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The department announced the launch of a new email address, Graffiti@nypd.org, where people can send information and photos of areas in need of urgent attention.<\/p>\n

Clean-up days will be scheduled \u2014 the first on April 10 \u2014 where a team of community volunteers, members of the Law Enforcement Explorers Program, auxiliary police officers and cadets, as well as the Police Athletic League, Inc. will paint over the graffiti at specific locations.<\/p>\n

Department officials announced the initiative outside the graffiti-marred eyewear shop MOSCOT, at the corner of Orchard and Delancey streets on the Lower East Side.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s app<\/a>arent why we\u2019re out here today,\u201d Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said. \u201cWhen you look around, it\u2019s spring, we\u2019re coming out of COVID, but New York City needs a little sprucing up today, so that\u2019s what we aim to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think it\u2019s a great opportunity to continue to build trust and relationships in New York City,\u201d he added. \u201cSo why not combine two things that we need. We need to work closer with the community\u2026and we\u2019re asking for something really simple: we need you help.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tips the NYPD receives will be assessed by precinct personnel and community leaders \u2014 with hate graffiti, or graffiti with offensive slogans or symbols, prioritized for cleanup.<\/p>\n

Authorities will also closely examine and analyze graffiti considered to be made by gangs or crews, to mark territory or send warnings to rivals.<\/p>\n

Typical \u201cstreet graffiti,\u201d consisting of so-called \u201ctags\u201d or \u201cpieces,\u201d will also be analyzed.<\/p>\n

Regular \u201cpaint-ins\u201d will be scheduled from April 10 moving forward, according to Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes, who added that \u201ctons of paint\u201d have been donated by community businesses. Police have not yet set any locations for the first event. <\/p>\n

The NYPD received more than 6,000 complaints last year about public and private property damaged by graffiti amid the pandemic and in the wake of rioting that spawned from protests after George Floyd\u2019s police-involved death in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Complaints included paint damage, or etchings with drill bits, metal objects, sandpaper and other tools, according to the department.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do have a vandals task force team already in place\u2026making sure that they\u2019re out there engaging individuals that choose to dirty up the city,\u201d said Rodney Harrison, who is beginning his new role as Chief of Department following Terence Monahan\u2019s departure. \u201cSo it\u2019s something that we take seriously\u2026we have to juggle a lot of different balls, one of them being violence, but we also have to address minor things.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Shea acknowledged that the city is also dealing with violent crime issues, \u201cthis isn\u2019t about statistics for me,\u201d he said, adding that the plans for the graffiti initiative were in the works for months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we can see it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a tough year, not just for New York City but across this whole country. This is about moving forward, it\u2019s about the recovery, it\u2019s about coming out together and cleaning up. That\u2019s the big statement we want to make.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to clean up a lot of this graffiti that\u2019s really just all over the neighborhood and making it look bad,\u201d NYPD Chief of Community Affairs Jeffrey Maddrey added. \u201cBut really it gives us an opportunity to build that trust, establish and re-establish relationships and have fun together.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
