Residents of the\u00a0UK were surprised over the weekend when a\u00a0slow-moving meteor\u00a0blazed across the\u00a0night sky.<\/p>\n

Videos posted to\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0taken from doorbells and dashcams across\u00a0Britain\u00a0show the fireball\u00a0just before\u00a010 pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n

A video<\/a>\u00a0from UK Meteor Network now has more than 100,000 views on YouTube.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas so clear,\u201d Twitter user\u00a0@JillHemingway wrote<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Twitter\u00a0alongside her own footage from Yorkshire.<\/p>\n

Another user, @Lafford_MK,\u00a0shared<\/a>\u00a0his nine-second video from his doorbell in the town of Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n

@gingerssnap<\/a>\u00a0wrote to her followers: \u201cAnyone else see the #meteor burn up over the UK just before 10pm tonight? I first thought it was a bright star or plane, then it got bigger & faster, then a huge flash lit up the sky & it burst into a massive tail of orange sparks trailing behind like a giant firework! So cool!\u201d<\/p>\n

The falling object flashed flight as it began to burn up and break down.<\/p>\n

The meteor\u00a0is likely to have been a small piece of a comet or asteroid entering the planet\u2019s atmosphere,\u00a0UK Meteor Network\u00a0co-founder\u00a0Richard Kacerek told The New York Times<\/a>, noting that some pieces of it were believed to have survived the fall.<\/p>\n

Some witnesses reported<\/a>\u00a0hearing a sonic boom or rumbling<\/p>\n

Scientists\u00a0from the UK Fireball Alliance (UKFall) agreed\u00a0and\u00a0told Yahoo News<\/a>\u00a0that the bright light was speeding at around\u00a030,000 miles per hour.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of people took to the internet with eyewitness reports of the incident.<\/p>\n

In general<\/a>, meteors are common, though less than 5 percent\u00a0make it to the ground,\u00a0according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Planetary Science Institute reports<\/a>\u00a0that app<\/a>roximately 500 meteorites make it to the\u00a0Earth\u2019s surface<\/a>\u00a0annually, but less than 10 are found.<\/p>\n

More than 50,000 meteorites have been found on Earth, most from asteroids, they report.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
