Gugu Mbatha-Raw<\/strong> is set to star in a different kind of haunted house thriller.\u00a0The Morning Show<\/em> star is set to star opposite\u00a0David Oyelowo<\/strong> in\u00a0The Girl Before<\/em><\/strong>, a new HBO Max limited series<\/a> co-produced by BBC One that follows a young woman who gets trapp<\/a>ed in a house designed by Oyelowo\u2019s architect.<\/p>\n

HBO Max and BBC One are teaming up to co-produce the psychological thriller\u00a0The Girl Before<\/em>, based on JP Delaney<\/strong>\u2018s bestselling book of the same name, which will star Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a young woman who gets trapped in a beautiful house by its enigmatic architect played by David Oyelowo. Emmy-nominated\u00a0Killing Eve<\/em> director\u00a0Lisa Br\u00fchlmann<\/strong> will helm the series.
\nHere is the logline for\u00a0The Girl Before:<\/em><\/p>\n

THE<\/span>\u00a0GIRL<\/span>\u00a0BEFORE<\/span>\u00a0tells\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0story of Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who gets\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0chance to move into a beautiful, ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect (David Oyelowo). There\u2019s just one catch: occupants have to abide by his list of exacting rules. Jane starts to feel\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0house changing her in unexpected ways but, when she makes\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0shocking discovery that her predecessor Emma died in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0house, she\u2019s forced to confront unnerving similarities. As\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0two women\u2019s timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0same as\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0girl<\/span>\u00a0before<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mbatha-Raw and Oyelowo are both two acting dynamos who seem like a great onscreen pairing, with Oyelowo getting to flex his chops as the villain of the piece. The pair had worked together before in\u00a0The Cloverfield Paradox<\/em>, though hopefully this limited series will leave more of an impact than that last team-up (which I had forgotten they had both starred in until just now). Mbatha-Raw will also mark her first time as a producer with\u00a0The Girl Before<\/em>, as associate produce on the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so excited to work with this amazing team on such a compelling story in my debut role as an actor and producer,\u201d Mbatha-Raw said in a statement. Added Oyelowo, \u201cThis story is mind bending in its clever construction and intricacy. I can\u2019t wait to see it, let alone be in it. The Girl Before<\/em> is based on the 2016 novel by JP Delaney, who creates, executive produces the series, and\u00a0co-writes the episodes with\u00a0Marissa Lestrade (White Stork<\/em>). Delaney said in a statement, \u201cHaving written for\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0screen in a previous career, it\u2019s long been a dream of mine to adapt\u00a0THE<\/span>\u00a0GIRL<\/span>\u00a0BEFORE<\/span>, but I was determined to only do it if I could find partners who wanted to pursue high-quality, classy storytelling above all else. You really couldn\u2019t get a more quality-focused line-up than 42,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0BBC and HBO Max \u2013 and we\u2019ve already attracted world-class talent in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0shape of Lisa, Gugu and David. Psychological thrillers can be even more gripping on television than they would be as movies, and I\u2019m incredibly excited to be re-telling this particular story in a visual medium. It\u2019s also been great fun to collaborate on episodes two and three with a brilliant co-writer, Marissa Lestrade.\u201d
\nAlso executive producing\u00a0The Girl Before<\/em> are\u00a0\u00a0Eleanor Moran, Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh for 42, Ben Irving for\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0BBC, and Lisa Br\u00fchlmann. Rhonda Smith will produce and Gugu Mbatha-Raw is an associate producer.<\/p>\n

The Girl Before<\/em>\u00a0will stream in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0U.S. on HBO Max and will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0U.K. No premiere date has yet been set.<\/p>\n
